I think it would have been awesome if they ended the movie just before we found out if he won or loss. Would piss people off but still awesome.

Another performance I feel John Goodman got ignored by the Academy. He always knows how to deliver some compelling characters. Although, he's great in every role he takes, but in recent years, his performances in The Gambler, Trumbo and 10 Cloverfield Lane have been some of his best work.

Love this movie, Mark Wahlberg (one of the best) Expresses freedom in this closing scene I only dream about. Braking bad habits and rebuking the demons within. Total "FREEDOM!" Dreams can come true. This is mine

I like that the scene stays on the vacant lot after he walks off screen. It’s a symbol of his life at that point... he can build it however he wants to because he’s starting over clean.

Man, they butchered this remake. Watching this after watching the original James Caan The Gambler from 1973 is like watching Nick Cage in The Wicker Man after watching the 1973 original.

I think when john goodman says   "good boy " at the end, it said a lot.   deep down the loan shark doesn't want to give him the money, he pities this guy, but he knows how life is, and he knows what he does and what hes always done.  it says a lot
Kris Bland (10 months ago)
I love how he refused the free $100K. Large sums of money was what got him into that mess in the first place, and he recognized that.

is the ball landing in the number 22 a homage to the classic movie "Casablanca" where Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blain tells the young husband "try 22"? one of the great short scenes in a great movie. in Las Vegas the number 22 is known as a "Casablanca"

Jimmy Larmour (2 years ago)
"what do you got on you?" "not a fucking cent." "thats not a fuck you position" "yes it is" I love this scene
J C (1 year ago)
Warlords0602 I agree. The loan shark's idea of a "fuck you position" was financial security. But it's subjective. In Jim's case, it was about finding "a real love, a real thing to do every day", etc. It's all about that moment when you realise 100% what you want in life, to the point where nothing else can change that. It's a liberating moment for sure. That's why he declined the money and just ran into the night! Awesome The sad thing is that it took Jim hitting rock-bottom to figure out his purpose. He didn't know what he wanted in life, and got into gambling because it gave him a sense of "taking action/risk", to fill that void in his life of being ordinary. But it was only through the process of losing everything, being in debt to gangsters, and then breaking even back to where he started, that he finally realised his true purpose. What's even sadder is that he had to resort to one last big all-or-nothing gamble to save himself, but luckily for him he was able to get out and have a 2nd chance with his newfound insight on life
Tide Pods (1 year ago)
+Warlords0602 I interpreted it the same exact way
Warlords0602 (1 year ago)
And technically you guys aren't entirely wrong, but there's just that there's another layer of meaning underneath that, which makes this movie a piece of modern art when dissected to the deepest of it's meaning, everything that appears on screen relates to something in his life, that is how good it is.
Warlords0602 (1 year ago)
Sorry but both of you are wrong. "Fuck you" symbolises freedom that nothing in the world can move or hurt them against their will. To the fat guy it means a solid monetary plan, but Mark is the grandson of the 17th richest man in California which he has a fuck ton of money if he's willing to beg. To Mark, throughout the whole movie he's struggling to find a good "fight" or a good "struggle" to make his life "real" instead of a perfect vision built entirely off money and parents. That's why he said fuck you to the fat guy, coz he is now fulfilled; for he is now whole, from rock fucking bottom to everything in one single bet for his life. And that is why he ran, not away from his lifestyle, he ran just coz he felt like it, like we scream when we win a big match or something. That is his freedom, he freed himself from his own broken mind that kept him in the box of "I have to do something for my life".

The ending of this movie was superb. Breaking free of an addiction that nearly ruined his life but finding the courage to bring an end to it. Very "moving". To have him running from it all was the topping on the sundae. Well done.
