The Ending Of Blade Runner Explained

If you're new, Subscribe! → http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-Looper In 1982, Ridley Scott's tech-noir classic Blade Runner was met with skeptical audiences and empty theaters, thanks in part to a series of slapdash changes made after low test screening scores panicked the studio. But now alternative versions of the movie — more in line with the director's original vision — are widely available to curious viewers. As a result, the film's popularity has risen steadily over the years, along with a lot of burning questions. Blade Runner depicts a near future in which androids — known as replicants — are so advanced that they're virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. And most of the debate surrounding the film centers on whether its hero Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, is a human or a replicant. Let's try to make some sense of it all... gaff has killed his gf, the origami unicorn is his hopelessness to recreate the lost ideal woman love interest that he has killed... he killed his love, he hates deckard but his loss make him advise deckard to have faith in the android that she can be a living one in some way, an eternal loss makes people think that they can achieve everything, it is a poet's means, deckard must someway find this belief system and he finds it from another who lived before him, most say that gaff or deckard is an android, this is an easy thought that contributes to nothing

(Talking strictly about the movies here, not the book.) They are not mechanical androids, they are not cyborgs (like the Terminator) they are flesh and blood artificial humans. Proof: Rachel's bones were found in a grave in 2049.

i'm no expert on the movie so i'm wondering what if deckard is a human and a replicant at the same time like a hybrid or something

Relpicants are robots are just test tube humans? If test tube humans with a set time limit hence their human.

Maybe Gaff and Dekard are both replicants? They could have the same memories in common since there were only a finite amount of memories available?
animist channel (1 month ago)
While Decker is obviously a replicant in the movie, you at least did him justice by posing the question as it was intended. What does is mean to be alive? Or as Claudia Black put it in an improv moment in Stargate SG-1: "You are also a Turtle." Sentience is not a lineage. It's a condition.
Lee Wright (1 month ago)
If replicants are illegal and must be terminated on Earth, then why is the police department using them? Why would they allow him to retire in the first place and then bring him back into use? It doesn't make sense.
Randal Rand (1 month ago)
No, he is not a Replicant (period). What kind of nonsense is this?!
Decard also doesn't share the same inhuman strength as the other replicants. He really does seem more human to me.
D. Paul Gladstone (1 month ago)
My vision is different than yours, but then you're an idiot to believe Deckard is a replicant. I believe Harrison Ford has the character down pat. Directors sometimes never know the story, just ensure people watch it. So who do you think knows the answer.
John Arthor (1 month ago)
If I am a moron for thinking Deckard is human, then Ridley Scott is an idiot for writing it so. Look, this is a beautiful movie, and one of the best ever made (both of them), really. The message is of the utmost. It is about what is a soul and compassion. But for it to be consummate and work symbolically, Deckard had to be human. Thus, the human and Replicant being in love and their fruition being a child. The unicorn in Medieval and Renaissance times was a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin. Deckerd changed after he saw the hurt in Rachael's eyes at his apartment. Damn Ridley, did you really miss that? Come on man.

I think Blade Runner had already become a major cult film before the alternative cutsbecame available. Dick's comments are probably the most pertinent we don't know if Decker is a replicant and it's not clear it makes any difference in his humanity.

In some ways Gaff is the most human character in the movie. He certainly does not have the attributes we might give the Replicants; he's short and scraggly looking, but at the same time he's definitely multi-ethnic as most humans at this point are bound to be, swarthy looks with light blue eyes hints at a wide heritage. In the original with a voice over by Harrison Ford it is hinted that perhaps the old prejudices no longer exist. He remarks how the one cops is the sort who would use racial slurs towards African Americans but this is perhaps no longer done, and perhaps the detective is African American himself even if he doesn't appear to be. In this future all the prejudice is directed towards the androids.

Of course he's not a replicant and he can't be one. Deckard is Descartes, pronnounced in french is similar to Deckard, and it's not a coincidence, Philip K Dick did it on purpose, because he wanted to explore the idea of human existence by denying what Descartes said in XVII century, that body and mind are separated substances. The logical consequence of this is that animals are machines because they don't have mind; so, they act because of behavioristic laws. That's why in the novel synthetic animals are so important, and why replicants are considered similar to animals. But of course animals aren't machines (ethology demonstrates it), not replicants either. And Deckard is human because he's a guy that hunts replicants, he's a human opposite to replicants, because he has feelings, memories... until of course, he discover his terrible mistake. He discovers that replicants have feelings too, and that they are exactly like humans. That's why he become in love with a replicant. The perseverance on Deckard being a replicant is annoying, based in circumstancial arguments that can't be proved which leads into a nonsense. But not only the novel, the original movie (not the following and preposterous cuts and re-cuts) are perfectly crafted with the deepest of meaning

This is such a contrived controversy. There is absolutely no question regarding whether or not R Deckard had parents, or was made in a lab. Sorry, Mr. Ford, I know you envisioned your character as having human parents, but you're just an actor. Nothing more. The message is far bigger than you. And... it's pretty crystal clear.

stupid that deckard is replicant..hes the only human character we have to relate to..the movie is all about replicants and their human nature...having deckard to be replicant makes zero sense since we dont have anyone to compare like roys replicant humanity vs real humans humanity(deckard) ...ridley scott really messed that one, like his alien movies hes been making resently

Im 38. I first saw this film when I was 7. At 7 years old, I naturally thought Deckard was a skin job. It wasn't until I was around 21 when I first discovered it was up for debate by the community. For me, Deckard being human makes absolutely no sense in the context of a film that intends to blur the line between human and clone by questioning what a human is or is capable of being. Tyrell's entire goal was to cheat death. The comment Gaff made to Deckard after the job was complete, made it pretty clear. I also thought that Deckard being a skin job who thought he was human was the entire twist. Why else would Batty not kill him? Why run off with a skin job if he was human? Tyrel wasn't legally allowed to create skins without limitations. Deckard was Tyrell's last laugh. He even says Decard was a skin job. The wise owl is all seeing. He has a synthetic eye. Rachael had synthetic eyes and so did Deckard. Why did Tyrell raise his hand when he said: "indulge me"? Almost all animals are extinct but Batty somehow captures a White dove? The symbol of the White Dove is rebirth or "procreation", held by Aphrodite. Which is precisely what Deckard and Rachael did. Deckard's daughter is Tyrell reborn.
Intergalactic Enemy (4 months ago)
Deckard gets his ass kicked by the replicants throughout the movie, and never actually wins a fair fight with any of them. That tells me he is human.
X Axis (4 months ago)
They are not robots because they are not metallic. They are biological like a clone . Are clones robots? I've never heard anyone refer to a clone as a robot. Hence the slogan of the Tyrell Corporation "more human than human". The story is not about the cops killing the replicants. It's about the replicants coming to grips with there morality. Their quest to find god and petition for and extension. They want to live.

If someone told the fans that Deckard was or wasn't a replicant, everyone would still believe what they want. The ambiguity of this film is part of its strength.

That was not the unexplained ending. The helicopter shot of the vehicle traveling to nowhere is the unexplained ending.
TheLeslieMichelle (4 months ago)
Deckard was a Nexus 8 replicate hybrid. Unlike a Nexus 6 replicate he ages and lives a long life span. Deckard doesn't know any of this, but the new replicate in the new movie shares his ability to dream by using other peoples memories.
Glyn Robertson-Clements (5 months ago)
My understanding of the movie is that "replicants" are clones not robots. They are grown to adulthood [ like in The 6th Day Arnold Schwarzenegger ] given false memories of growing up to fool them that they are human. Why bother is the question ? if not only to hide that they have a limited lifetime of use while in their prime before they expire and therefore cannot hope to grow old as they may believe they will. they are for use in situations were you really need a human but don't want to risk a human life. Some replicants realise what they are and try to find a way to survive past [email protected] expiration date.

“Rachel is an experiment, nothing more.” (Deckard too..)
Sandy Prater (5 months ago)
I get what Scott was doing, but I prefer Harrison’s take on it - or rather the fact that Harrison has a dissenting voice which enhances the ambiguity of the question. To turn Scott’s quote against him...you shouldn’t be so obvious as to make a film which caters to morons. Dick had the right idea all along. Ford’s contrary statement elevates the film a bit and adds depth to an otherwise cliche slight-of-hand. I choose to believe in the idea of Deckard as a human foil and a relatable perspective, but I also like the small bit of “but what if...”

It’s actually so much simpler than that. In the beginning of the film it was stated that 6x replicants were created. 3x Female and 3x male. Throughout the film we encounter and take out 4x of them. Leon and Roy are the 2x males while Zhora and Pris are the 2x females.... Rachael and Deckard are the 5th and 6th replicants.
Fred Vanhees (7 months ago)
Deckard can't be a replicant Nexus 7, because if he was, his physical strength should, logically, outperform that of the Nexus 6 replicants. Which it doesn't. Cfr his combat scenes with Zora, Leon, Priss, and Roy.

The movie is not the book's story. But it seems to me that the whole point of the film ending is Roy Batty showing Deckard how machinelike he has become, how inhuman. I think Ridley Scott jumped on someone else's idea of 'Deckard the Replicant', and made it his own 'vision', after the film was made, because it's an interesting premise.

Maybe he did know he was a replicant but he just never mentioned it, that's why he doesnt reply to rachael when she asks if he'd ever done the test on himself and he doesnt seem very shocked when he finds the origami unicorn, maybe Gaff left it there just to remind him of what he is and that he is doing the right thing.

I have seen the original 6 times. Never once did I entertain the idea Deckard was a replicant. The so called evidence is very weak. That stuff about his colleague Gaff hinting at it is balderdash. The guy wants his job. That explains his appearances and his decision not to kill Rachael. Watching the sequel, the fate of Rachael makes it all the more improbable that D. was a replicant..
