George R.R. Martin Says The Five Key Characters Are No Longer Safe? - Game of Thrones Season 8

0 ratings | 111911 views
Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and ASOIAF video. Today I want to talk about George R.R. Martin's original outline for A Song of Ice and Fire. In 1993 he wrote a short outline for how his story would unfold, and this outline was posted online by his own publisher. It's obvious that most of his original ideas have changed, but fans have wondered if the 5 key characters were still destined to live throughout each volume. During an interview, GRRM said, he was making things up when he wrote that outline, but was he being honest, or trying to mislead us into believing Tyrion, Daenerys, Arya, Bran, and Jon Snow are no longer guaranteed to survive the series? The links to each page are down below, for any of you who would like to read them for yourself. If George was telling the truth, and he changed the outcome of some of these central characters, then we should see the same during the final season of Game of Thrones. Dan & Dave have said on multiple occasions that they know how George will end his story, but are they going to do the same as him, in terms of how each main character's story comes to an end? Let me know what you think about GRRM's comments. Put your thoughts down below. Thank you for watching! I think 5 characters are too many to live for GOT!!!Hahahaha....Unfortunatelly...
Cata Fuentes (2 days ago)
I would be pretty pissed too. Even if he doesn't intend for it to end like the initial outline, it does give away a fair bit about the story itself.

The intro is daaaark... I like it :D
There is no Night King in the books.......let’s not confuse the books and show. Things an author can convey in a book often have to be altered when made into shows an movies.
mršo njanjaTM (11 days ago)
My opinion is probably realy unpopular, but i would really like for both Danny and Jon to die, in a sort of great sacrefice. I would like to see Jon die while killing the night king.
Matthew Leland (14 days ago)
Arya and Bran will survive. No way Cersei lives and no way both Jon and Daenerys live.
Doug Faulkner (16 days ago)
I say it's a good thing that HBO is doing the show or we will never get an ending. Martin will NEVER finish the books.

Nobody ever thought they were safe. Everyone knows you are killing Jon, Danny and Cersei.

I knew it. The books kept adding new things randomly and then dropped something I thought would be important later on! It was like he had a new idea book 5 at page #1,243!

Doesn’t really matter ASOIAF will never be completed

Exactly, we shouldn't have outlines for books or trailers for TV shows. That sabotages everything.
soyon manlai (25 days ago)
Pay attention to the small details so that the twist might make sense at the end?
Raymond Holloway (26 days ago)
I don't think his concern was a spoil... I think he was upset about the outline, because it's his art. I know I'm very sensitive about my BTS stuff. I believe he wanted his notes about his work to be his own.
Shareen Mansfield (26 days ago)
As a publisher I agree with Martin. I have a non-disclosure agreement for all my writers . When someone submits to my magazine I don’t always approve or accept the piece for publication. If I were to share excerpts of books that I get advanced for publication or anything submitted to me I’m taking value from the author. For integrity I never disclose communication or share anything submitted even declined without express permission. It’s intellectual property. When I publish I retain first digital rights . I don’t own their work or what they write. If I am creating an anthology of work published I get permission first. Sometimes , I get a piece that doesn’t fit my publication but I know it’s an amazing must read. I ask if I can pitch it to another trusted publication because I want to help authors succeed. Same with books I get for review. I don’t spoil the book before it’s published and I would be pissed if my writing is published without my permission. The damage is done.martin is now stuck with fans theories based on a pitch he successfully made. I’ve pitched pieces and had to revise . I ended up with three versions of one pieces a few years ago. It got accepted in the publication I originally pitched a draft for. Luckily, the revisions made me write three sand alone pieces which got published in two other publications. Had I not pitched the idea I never would have been accepted because most sites want first digital rights my own site included. I’d be pissed like he was. I agree about Arya & Jon but I feel Danyelle will die in battle like Aegon’s sister wife died in Dorbe. We keep going back to Dorne .. many things go back to Dorne in the book

Dan and Dave will make the ultimate decision for the tv ending.

I think they all live save Bran. Also I think Sansa will live too.
Lisa Guill (27 days ago)
GRRM stated at the end of the first book that the 'devil is in the details.' I highly suggest fans reread that first book. The answer for the ultimate Iron Throne king is right there. Its not jon, its not Dany,......I'll not spoil it for you, but, I will say this, never judge a book by its cover.
Noelia Jaime (28 days ago)
He's just trying to mislead us,as he always does. The outline was real. :-)
Andrea Barton (28 days ago)
As a writer and teacher, I can vouch for the fact that nothing on the outline had to be accurate for him to be insulted or pissed that it was hung up like a freaking poster. It was his intellectual property and wasn't meant for public consumption and was used that way without his permission. Any idiot who works at a publishing company should know better.

Thanks for another great video!!! Never heard his response before neither so thanks for sharing. Just think it was bs he was forced to write an outline. Guess we’ll find out soon enough if he was just making stuff up.
ichigo kurosaki (30 days ago)
I would just disregard it completely. Some of the characters will live and others will die and however the show goes down compared to the outline would just be coincidence. Also outlines and other notes between editors are supposed to be confidential. Whether or not it's true, displaying the outline was wrong and completely unprofessional

Did you hear the theory that the twist at the end of the series finale is that the dragon Queen becomes the night King's wife as a pact between the living and the dead? Or that the waif is still alive and she took Aria's face when they faced off in Bravo's?

Bran, Jon, and Dany will live. They are Gandalf, Frodo, and Aragorn. They are prophet, priest, and king (queen this time). The Christ figure spread through three characters, just like Tolkien did. Then again, the Christ figure/hero’s journey is such a common literary device, Martin may be setting us up.

I agree with Mr. M one hundred percent when it comes to "entrusting" first drafts or outlines to an editor. Hanging up a first draft idea on a wall in a room (no matter what it is) without getting permission from the author first, is totally unprofessional. First drafts and outlines are for the editors eyes only unless otherwise agreed upon. It's called trust! If you can't trust your editor to respect your privacy then it's time to look for another editor!

Or maybe other characters are going to live (I surely hope so, my fave is still alive and I wanna keep it that way)
Justin Bailey (1 month ago)
I think in the process of creating the characters in game of thrones and fleshing them out, the characters themselves created the story and took the story into places George Martin never intended or even thought of. I like to think that happened with thrones and I hope that the writers don't yield to fan service and let thrones progress to the finale it intended for itself.
Meredith Villano (1 month ago)
Interesting, all 5 characters have died, either literally ( Jon) or figuratively. Bran "dying" and becoming the Three eyed Raven and Arya becoming No-One are obvious. Daenerys could have "died" during her fires and were reborn. And Tyrion ... it might be a stretch but Tyrion Lanister could have figuratively died after he killed his father and changed his alliances...
Hart Johnson (1 month ago)
I think at one time this was his broad plan, but he really shook up a number of things. He broke Jaime into Jaime and Cersei, giving much of the darkness to Cersei and leaving Jaime grey. And the love triangle with Tyrion, Arya and Jon... yeahnono. Tyrion with Sansa suggests MAYBE Sansa got this and it may play out, but I really don't think even that. And Bran didn't take any family north of the wall. It all totally went sideways.

Why should Jon have to kill Bran if he is the Night King? Maybe Bran would be a benevolent Night King who just wants to Make The North Great Again.

Talking Thrones - as we all know, the Vale has not been seized in the 1,000 years of it's standing, as numbers count for nothing between the narrow rock walls. (300 anyone?) could this serve as the perfect retreat to the defenders of the Winterfell should they need to fall back? the sheer numbers of the whites is one of their biggest assets, and I can think of no other reason the show would repeatedly remind us about the Vale's unique defenses

You just never really know, until the end. But if that was me, it probably means that I'm pissed because now I have to change things...i.e. kill off people I didn't intend to. So, although I would love for 'the fab five' to still be alive, I really don't think that's gona happen. I do hope that the ending is very similar to your prediction though...just cos I'm a sucker for a happy ending! ;-D

You should have used the scene from the movie 'Straight Out Of Compton" when Ice Cube goes into the executives office with a bat and just smashing and destroys everything. Look up the scene if you haven't seen it. I think it fits George's rage perfectly lol.

I think George was being sincere in his reaction to the outline being published. So I think we have to reason about who will live and who will die in terms of what makes a good story. If all 5 of the central characters die, it probably wouldn’t be that great of a story. George might be able to pull that off, though, who knows?

Yeppers... the show is just garbage now. I'm FINE with some twists (Cersei not being a complete dullard, though she's older in show; same with Sansa until S5 which I won't talk about). But all of this is meaningless to me without hope of TWOW getting released. And EVERY. TIME. I hear about George writing ONE CHAPTER... then see him out on tour somewhere, and working hard at HBO prequel, my eyes make Drogon's flames look like WEAK SAUCE.

Mel*of*Winterfell Well the last book of Wheel of Time is about unreadable, it would not be the same. Honestly I think Martins books Dying of The Light and Fevre Dream blow away his Song of Ice and Fire. He is a great world builder but there are like 500 pages describing food in Ice and Fire. Love the show tho. Amber series by Zelazny is righteous.
Mel*of*Winterfell (1 month ago)
He has writers picked out, like Robert Jordan did, to finish up his books if he dies. None of us are promised a tomorrow and GRRM is almost 70. Robert Jordan was only 58 when he passed. I dont mean to offend anyone. As a nurse we deal with life and death, its part of the package. George isnt exactly Jack Lellane. (For you very young pups, he was a fitness expert and lived to be 97) I don't know why he just doesn't get help now to finish them. He has even admitted he has to check over his writing through the ASOIAF with a "bible", I believe that is what I heard it was called. Brian Cogman is mentioned by D&D like he knows ALOT of ASOIAF in details. They use him as an fact checker. GRRM has had co-authors before. I personally think he may have wrote himself into a corner because he made the world so real and so many people know the history of Westeros and Essos better than our world history. Lol. That's just my thought on it.😏
History Eraser Button (1 month ago)
Jossymary Mena He wont finish just like Robert Jordan did not finish his Wheel of Time series. The show will be the only conclusion in my opinion.

All the good guys die defeating the night king, Cersei and Uron live.. they re-write history and make it so that the Lannisters and Greyjoys were the heroes that defeated the NK and thus they begin a 1,000 year dynasty, the end.
Iggy123 (1 month ago)
When writing any story, especially one as epic as A Song of Ice and Fire. I would tend to believe things would change as time moved on. 20 years ago he was a totally different person with different views on the series. I don't think any character is safe and that the outline (while it may hold some key points) is pretty much useless at this point.
Dave Dahl (1 month ago)
To me the bittersweet ending is Jon dies. (He’s on borrowed time anyway. He’s basically a wight from the lord of light anyway.). Daenerys dies too. So do the dragons. Tyrion ends up as regent raising Jon and Dany’s child. Arya will end up being badly wounded and has to be cared for by Gendry and Brienne. Bran dies and magic fades again from the world. This saga reminds me more of Lloyd Alexander’s chronicles of Prydain. That series had a very bittersweet ending.
★_Vizualize_★ (1 month ago)
I think everyone is going to die. It's not done that often or ever.
Stealth (1 month ago)
While I think odds are that not ALL of the characters will survive, Martin is probably angered that it's at least close to the mark. If 4 are definitely safe then it creates a problem for the series where unpredictability and the safety of people is always in doubt. Of those 5 I think Tyrion though is the safest. I see no real scenario where he dies. Dany is probably the most at risk.
ruthieo54 (1 month ago)
🔥 he probably ignored fine print saying they could do what they want with materials he gives them, but, you never know. I hope there is a positive ending to the series even if it’s a handful of people building a new life for themselves. I enjoyed your “duet” video with Gray Area, that was cool.
VG LittleBear (1 month ago)
Hi, I highly enjoyed the video, thank you! 💕 I'm kind of hoping that the show and the books will end fairly different, or rather that the end of the show won't be the end of the series. Maybe because the POV will go on with a different character from the one(s) the show is revolving about. There are so many threads that have never been mentioned in the show, deaths that occurred, and may yet occur under different circumstances in the books. I've been reading long before the show came to my attention. I enjoy widely different takes on the same characters, so delaying the books until the show is out of the way is a good move IMHO. In the meantime your channel brings up so many interesting points and theories, I love it! 💕 I've been browsing through the comments, and liked some representing a few of my thoughts. As far as the initial story outline goes, let's not forget it was just a starting point. It certainly defined a few pov characters, but GRRM seems not the kind of writer who defines each character's ending point upfront by his own words. The whole point of fiction is that you're not limited by known outcomes in history. Thanks and cheers! 🐾🐻

The army of the dead destroys the north down to kings landing. Cersie kills the northerners knowing they are trapped between the dead and her, even knowing they could help. Our heroes are taking hostage killed and tortured. Almost all of them. Then Bran has a vision of his father when he arrives at kings landing. He shouts to him and shakes his father and shows Ned everything that will happen and Ned hears him. Cut to Ned walking into kings landing. He tells someone to send his daughters home and then meticulously destroys the lanisters killing everyone in his path becoming mad with rage and hate. Uniting the realm he takes the fight to the walkers before they get going.
Drew Halfhand (1 month ago)
What if they shot the ending 10 years ago? C'mon. Bran changes the past and shows Ned the outcome of his actions? Ned would go mad and do anything to protect his family and the realm. Seeing the realm divided even when the Night King upon them. Ned is also...the Little brother.

I dont think its weird for him to be pissed wether its real or not, like he said thats something that should stay between the writer and editor. This can easily put mistrust in George towards who ever released it.

I hope those 5 characters do live. I want Jon to have children with Daenerys. Sansa and her siblings to live marry and have kids with greensight. A stark must always remain in winterfell.
Jim Griffiths (1 month ago)
When you sit down and write a story, the story just writes itself. Of course his outline was more or less how he thought it was going to go, but anyone who creates a story knows that deep in the trance of creative writing, the story will go where the story goes. Give George a break.
Just A Nugget (1 month ago)
I think Jon snow is going die eventually. Since he technically already died and was bought back using magic for the the purpose of defeating the night king. I believe he's just on borrowed time since the magic used to bring him back I don't think will be permanent. I also think that a similar fate might happen in the case of arya since there's more to the story about her training and becoming a "faceless man" who also serves the many faced god of death. I believe these talents and gifts will come at a price to what that might be I don't know but I do think she will have to return after all is done which would cost her, her life. I see Sansa possibly surviving due to the fact that up and till now she hasn't needed to use magic as a form of surviving which may work in her favour since we all know magic always comes at a price. Just take the night king for example.
