Stannis going North was always very confusing to me. I know he did it to increase his numbers and have a different plan of attack but it seems a little odd that he would go through such inhospitable terrain to eventually get to Kings Landing. In the end that's exactly what happened.
msa1985 (1 year ago)
Would have been terrible for advertising, but for the sake od the writing, stannis should have become king, etc., daenerys destroyed, the dragons on their own or killed, and jon snow stayed dead. Sansa as lady of winterfell, wed to whomever. Instead they turned it into a shark jumping mess with everyone getting together. Oh well. At least we get to see a big white walker war and dragons let loose. Hopefully Sansas pink nipples make an appearance.

Rex Galilae What?
Rex Galilae (1 year ago)
Blame D&D for that. They just wanna see their little inbred heroine Danny be perfect in every way. They took a ridiculous U-turn on her character. From the wife of fucking Khal Drogo who oversaw the brutal murders of many including her very brother with no sense of remorse to a little bitch who cries coz slavery exists.

Also no, the north was to sstannis by right. with the mad king, and even king bob, the north was theirs, yes starks would be wardens of the north which is close to the same thing. but the main problem stannis had with robb stark was that robb knew what renly was doing was wrong, yet was going to join renlys army because of his superior numbers, you need to pick up a book or watch a show thats not as complicated for you
Adam K (2 years ago)
also stannis burned his daughter because he true felt if he didnt, that the white walkers would take over and kill all of man kind. He knew Mels powers were real, shadow babies etc, and was in a terrible spot, and needed to win the throne so he could command every1 to the wall to fight the white walkers, way he saw it was his only option to save man kind, hence show is still stupid and books doesnt go down like that but he did it in show to save man kind as he saw it

craig murray (9 months ago)
I stopped watching after the ruined Stannis. He's not a young, good looking, teenage girls writing fan fiction about character and clearly doesn't take the throne in the books (sadly) so they went "fuck it, tie up some loose ends here" Had him burn his daughter (wtf) and then attack a larger force when most his army deserted him.
Robertz1986 (1 year ago)
Stannis could only act on the information and evidence he had available. He had strong reason to believe that Mel knew what she was talking about, she had provided convincing demonstrations previously of arcane powers and the strength of blood sacrifice, and they both had every reason to believe it would be successful. He wasn't acting on blind faith, she had given him strong reason to be confident, and she had misinterpreted it, but he had no way to know, and the army was likely going to be defeated no matter what if he didn't do it.

Maximus Brutus (3 years ago)
Sorry Martin but this entire idea is bullshit: there is no military explanation why Stannis didn't march on Kings landing again with his new army and fleet (no tywin, nor tryion now) and instead decided to go north to the wall, and then again march south to Winterfell - its just like trying to invade Rome from Greece but instead sailing to Siberia, then marching back to Rome through Russia in the middle of the winter. Impossible strategy and we saw how it ended. Saving the kingdom? Take the fucking throne, unite the kingdom(s), then march north. But you run out of ideas...

this is slightly off topic  but   expanding the name white walkers to everyone's vocabulary ,is in my opinion an instance where  the show improved on the book , cause in the books only the wildlings  call them that and everyone else calls them "the others"  granted white walkers isnt anything phenomenal  and bears a striking similarity to villains in a certain other fantasy story, but others is so generic you may as well have called them "the darkness"
John Lovell (3 years ago)
Anyone who says "The books are better than the series" or "The show is better than the books" is a tool. People have their own individual preference. That is all.
Christian charles (3 years ago)
So basically, Stannis is doing something that's actually important.
Blackfalk (3 years ago)
PLOT HOLE! how did Stannis & that huge army cross the wall so easily? that tunnel's too narrow to let them through so quickly (and Jon just went through that tunnel not long ago so he'd have noticed anyone following) did they sail around the wall? if that's so easy then what's the point of the wall since the wildlings could just as well bypass it without climbing
ThatsMrFrank (3 years ago)
However more accurately, he literally just sailed to Eastwatch and then marched via the watch roads on the north side of the Wall, like happens in the books.
Charlene Tan (3 years ago)
stannis just returned from braavos so he probably just sailed with his army and docked north of the wall. and the wildlings don't have ships so their only option is to go over the wall
KVJ (3 years ago)
+schwarzfalk Mance Rayder bypassed the wall, went to the feast in Winterfell (the one for Robert), and then went back North. It is relatively easy for one person/a group to cross the wall, but extremely difficult for larger groups.
Patrick Snow (3 years ago)
Yes but they can't leave the other 2 castle undefended, Mance was watching all three castles. And the Night watch have between 300 to 400, I can't remember the exact number. But it averages about 125 per castle.
Shadownet Spy (3 years ago)
So, if Stannis can get north of the wall by sea, then why can't the Wildlings do the same? I can't imagine it would be that difficult for them to build a ship or two, and it seems a lot safer than trying to climb over the bloody thing.
ThatsMrFrank (3 years ago)
Theyre just really crap at making ships. Wildlings take small rafts into the North all the time, but they really cant build ships.
Drew Carras (3 years ago)
Too bad the producers didn't use that fucking sick quote. Instead they have Stannis have Davos executed, but not before Melisandre tells him otherwise. Again, David and Dan are assassinating Stannis' character in the show, Dan even openly admits his hatred of Stannis. I really like the adaptation, but wtf? Why can't the writers just remain neutral and portray the material as it is in the books? I am fine with cutting some parts, but at least create the same message, even if it is more concise.
Henri_disap (1 year ago)
Damn you were right, now the houses of the north and the wildlings rejected him, he was outsmarted by 20 good men while being the best military commander, he burned his daughter, lost the battle of winterfell, was killed at the hands of Brienne, with the sword of Ned the man who died for him. And a lot of characters talk shit about him in season 6, what the fuck D&D?

I dont want to go from the start again but if you recommend me to start from book 1 because of such reasons then I will. thanks a lot.

Hey I got a question (I'm a book reader btw), the Moon Door in Eyrie can reach the bottom of the ground, yet Eyrie is described on top of a mountain. So, is the mountain hollow? Or is the mountain only and illusion and Eyrie is levitating? I have not a clue of how the Moon Door drop a prisoner from Eyrie's main hall to the bottom of the ground? (Bot a good explanation hope you all get the point though).
Ramsrock39 (1 year ago)
So two years later I can answer this. In the books the Moon Door is actually built into the wall, so you fall out and over a cliff like you would if you leap from the Sky Cells (what Tyrion was in Season 1). In the show they put it on the floor because... well because it's the show. But in the books it actually makes sense!

Stannis (Fucking) Baratheon The First, King of the Andals and the First Men. The Wall doesn't keep Wildlings and White Walkers out, it keeps Stannis IN.
Brennan Kaisen (4 years ago)
I find it hard to believe Stannis could take the Wildlings unawares, Mance knows that the Others are at his heels and all around him, he would have scouts. Also, you have to factor in Mance and the Wildlings know those woods better than anyone, how could foreigners be able to slip through it without their knowledge
R jr (4 years ago)
By far that is my favorite Stannis quote that George just said. "I was trying to become king to save the realm when I should have been trying to save the realm to become king. Along those lines. Best quote ever. The moment Stannis was number one in my book.

Look at the beard on Martin.   Had he ever exercised in the cold he would know that your beard gets FULL of ice (the humidity as you exhale freezes in your beard).   Except he did not do his research. So all his scenes of the north look fake to anyone who knows the north.
ebisawkward (4 years ago)
I think Stannis is gonna win this thing.
Skeptical Simmy (4 years ago)
This plot development really made me like Stannis for the first time - he's the only would-be king doing anything to actually help the kingdom of Westeros. The Lannisters are too busy plotting and securing their power, and Dany is...too busy withering away in Meereen to be of any use in Westeros. I think I might have to join Team Stannis (although if Jon Snow turns out to have the parentage I think he has, I'm totally on Team Snow). :)
Mikeztarp (4 years ago)
If it's so easy to sail around the wall, what is the point of building it?
Khosbayar Xocoo (4 years ago)
But Stannis has just recently lost in a fight. How come he has a huge army to beat 100'000 wildlings in a matter of seconds?
Patrick Snow (3 years ago)
He had 60000 men when he attacked kings landing, after the battle was lost many of those who didn't die in the battle abandon stannis. like he said at the iron bank he has 4000 men left, if you count the Calvary on screen it ads up to near 3100. so how 3100 beat 100000, well wildlings are undisciplined. horses are rare beyond the wall, so seeing all those Calvary probably made a lot of them lose their nerve and run away. and out of the 100000 wildlings only about 30000 are real fighters.

stannis the mannis
Kristuf Christuf (4 years ago)
Plot holes galore. One of the biggest is the fact that Stannis can get beyond the wall without going through the most heavily guarded part of the wall yet the wildling army which has been scouting both sides of the wall for along time doesnt know that there are parts of the wall not guarded or maned and they could easily build thousands of boats out of the forests they are hiding in and bypass the entire wall itself.
bencs25 (4 years ago)
Not to mention the fact that the tunnel through the wall at the Castle Black is the only way that Mance can get his free folk through the wall - free folk who include children and weaklings. All of the abandoned castles have sealed tunnels which would take far too long to clear, and Mance has neither the time nor ability to build rafts or ships to ferry his host around the wall.
David Humphreys (4 years ago)
except for the boats everything you just said made no sense. The wall is not guarded against Stannis. When the eastern coastal fortress met him they let him through the wall to hit the eastern flank of the wildiling army and in the episode Mance says that he sent 400 men to climb an unguarded stretch of the wall. Only three gates are still unsealed in the wall and the biggest is at Castle Black which is why the Wildlings attacked there.

mj .twardy (4 years ago)
I'm confused. How did Stanis get north of the wall all of a sudden? Wasn't he at the Iron Bank? Who called him?
Matt Woady (4 years ago)
Davos mentions in one of his chapters that the Red Woman used some kind of sorcery to give them the wind to sail to the wall so fast with no issues. They also burned Axel Florent i think his name was right before they left and Davos also believes that his sacrifice is what did it. It's not for sure but Davos does mention that everything happened way to convenient for there not to be sorcery involved.
mj .twardy (4 years ago)
Sorry, didnt catch that. Maybe I should watch the show again? :P
DATskorge (4 years ago)
I have not read any of the books at all but I knew stannis was going to show up, thought it would happen in episode 9. There was enough information in the show to definitely make it clear enough if you consider that stannis whole reason for going to braavos was so that he could field an army north of the wall.
mj .twardy (4 years ago)
Yeah. Ok. I get it. Maybe in the books this was clear an all. In the series thoug, there was Stannis at the Iron Bank, than Sir Davos visits the baths and talks to the privateer. Than theres the whole rumbble at the Wall and suddenly Stannis's army hops out from nowhere. So you have to admit that for someone who didn't read the books it might look a bit surprising.
