What Happened During The Red Wedding In The Books? - A Song of Ice and Fire

0 ratings | 56794 views
Welcome back to Talking Thrones. In this video I will be reading one of the most powerful chapters in the entire story. I have had many requests to do something like this so I figured what better way to test the waters than to read the chapter in which The Red Wedding takes place. According to the author, George RR Martin, he says this was the hardest chapter to write, but also one of his most powerful scenes to date. Almost everyone knows what happened during this scene, but do you know how it played out in the books? I hope all the non books readers enjoy this, and maybe even gain some more insight into how amazing the source material is. I know many people do not like Catelyn Stark, but it's hard not to sympathize for her after reading this chapter. Anyways, get your popcorn ready and put your feet up, because the King in the North arises... Thank you all for watching! Chapter written by: George R.R. Martin Images and video clips from Game of Thrones are property of their creators, used here under fair use. Not just that but strangely, I love the way TT tells a story..

The Untapped Series Correct. Robb's wife was not there. She is not pregnant either, according to her mother.
The Untapped Series (1 month ago)
I actually liked the HBO version of The Red Wedding so much more. Maybe it was the knife to the belly. Rob's wife is still alive in the books, if I remember.
Mr. Vain (1 month ago)
read the book then!
Kelly Fortune (3 days ago)
I like the readings. Secrets of the Citadel has been doing chapter summaries which is something else that your viewers who have not read the books might enjoy. She has all of the first book and has some from the second and is still actively doing the series. Another idea for reading is the part where the Frey wards at Winterfell play The Lord of the Crossing with Rickon and the whole “Mayhaps” that Walder Frey later slips in before the red wedding when they first arrive at the twins. That’s was the first indication that they weren’t safe, the equivalent of crossing your fingers while you say something to negate it. I wish they had included this in the show. It was a small but important detail that wouldn’t have taken long to incorporate.

How do you know dawn is at starfall? Ser Arthur Daynes sister would not have commited suicide right after Ned brought home the family sword. No, she did so while Ned was on the way so he put the sword in Liana Starks crypt to show Jon his father Rhaegar had the best sword defending him.

I really wish they included the Lady Stoneheart stuff in the show after watching this video.
Jesse McClellan (1 month ago)
I miss lady stoneheart. Such a great character in the books not included in the show.
Born Medicated (1 month ago)
Man that would be awesome but the Jamie story would totally have to change. I think in the show it's more of an action movie to where the books are more character driven. The show would have to be as long as like Walking Dead and I guess they didn't want to do that. Even the Red Wedding was changed dramatically for the show. Don't get me wrong at 1st the show was on piont for the most part but now it's like I said an action movie.
Talking Thrones (1 month ago)
I really wish they did too. Her scene with Brienne is amazing.

Roslyn Frey was the best looking female in the show and the Red Wedding began as the happiest moment yet seen. How sadistically cruel to send us all from that warm glow to the massacre it became.

What’s every ones favorite book? Mines book 3 “A Storm of swords” just because of all the huge stuff that happens in book 3. If you read the series you know what I mean. So tell me what’s your favorite book not your favorite season and tell me why that book was your favorite.

I see the books as just more of the tv show just better and it last longer👌🏿. S1 through 7 at most there is 10 episodes per season which can take u a weekend to get through or you can read the book and read it at a much slower or faster pace but it will still take u a couple weeks to get through a thousand page book at least for me. I took my time with this series and I loved every minute of it because the story was better in the book then the tv show😂. Don’t get me wrong I love the show but you definitely shouldn’t count out the books. You can also if you want read book1 then watch s1 so u don’t have to wait until you finish all 5 books to watch the show.
I remembered reading it and not wanting to ever watch S3 because I knew this was coming. I went to Dragoncon where people kept talking about having seen it or not. Most that hadn't seen it had read the book. I didn't watch it until HBO did a marathon before S4 and though it wasn't as bad as the book it was still hard to watch. I wished that even when they didn't bring Cat back as LSH that they had really done her death properly by the book. There's so many things that show watchers miss by not reading the books. What seems so horrible on tv is so much more that they don't know what they miss. Please do the chapter where Jon dies. Some people still don't know he's dead in the books and has been dead for some time now. Lastly please do more videos like this. They're a refresher for us book readers and a learning experience for the show watchers. Thanks TT for always having something fresh. Between you and mama GA I stay ready!
Talking Thrones No thanks needed! You have some of the best content around. And I can't wait for the Dany's visions chapter. People have no idea that's majorly different.
Talking Thrones (1 month ago)
I will absolutely do Jon's death chapter. I have already recorded the audio for Dany's House of the Undying chapter. I will release that in a few days. I have two other videos I will release first, though. Thank you very much for watching, and commenting.

One thing that has always amazed me is how well George writes about women and their feelings ...
Talking Thrones (1 month ago)
psychology of women*
Talking Thrones (1 month ago)
Yup that's true. I just figured maybe he has read up on the psychology or women, or something else along those lines.
Mary Hill (1 month ago)
Talking Thrones but being a feminist doesn't necessarily mean a man can understand women's feelings so well. Just like I'd never be able to feel true masculine feelings so well, though I truly love and support men. And my best friends are men.

What about Purple Wedding?
Karan Kakkar (1 month ago)
Aubrey Crowder Exactly
Aubrey Crowder (1 month ago)
Karan Kakkar that was also a great couple of chapters. The best part was the anticipation that Sansa was finally going to leave kings Landing. At least in the books any way not as much though in the tv show.
Talking Thrones (1 month ago)
It's on the list

If anyone was on the fence about GoT's tv version after viewing the Red Wedding you are either all in or you are not a fan! That episode more so than any other sealed my fandom and I'm sure it did for others.

I’ve read the books twice ...all 5035 pages x 2, plus all the released advance chapters of “Winds of Winter” and the “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” but never tire of reading or hearing these chapters. You have good taste! Thanks for reading the chapter. Always awesome to revisit George’s elegant writing.

Lightbringer theory... Ser Arthur Daynes sword dawn is the sword of the morning. Dawn is going to bring the light back to Westeros. Ned Stark put the sword in the crypts for Jon to find and use. It will make the connection with his lineage story and help to defeat the Night King.

I wonder if Roslin exists or if she knew what was coming?
Talking Thrones (1 month ago)
She knew, that's why Catelyn had that realization at the end. It all hit her at once. Alesander wasnt there, Olyvar wasnt there, and Roslin wept during the bedding ceremony.
Lazy Leo Tyrell (1 month ago)
Her brothers were sent away from the Twins, so she probably had a feeling that something is not alright
Eric Rawlings (1 month ago)
The hardest thing for me watching the red wedding was watching Catelyn Stark get her throat slit.
Eric Rawlings (1 month ago)
I think they need to wrap up Edmere Tulley and whatever happened to him and his disappearance of his wife and child.  I'm not a fan of him, but it just doesn't seem right or make sense to leave it be to me.  It doesn't make any sense.

Will Winds of Winter ever come out?
minissa2009 (1 month ago)
Remembering this scene from the books meant I had to skip through it in the show. I've seen it in bits and pieces and would class it as the most insanely violent scene in the series, esp where Robb's wife gets jabbed in her very pregnant abdomen (she stayed home in the book). Not a big fan of an eye for an eye, and the books haven't gotten to this yet, but there was something satisfying about Arya's revenge. I wish you'd seen in the books or TV show the reaction of all other noble families to the Freys' betrayal. Walder Frey is a jerk from the first time you meet him, but it seems he's slitting his own throat (ha ha) by doing this because he's effectively saying "No one can trust me and my family" when he offers them the bread and salt/cheese and then slaughters them. There should have been some consequences way before Arya got to them
