Action Words, Part 1 (Classroom Physical Activity Breaks)

09:11
Colleen Evans discusses and demonstrates a physical activity for a classroom, where children move to action words in a book with action words (such as "Barnyard Dance"). Grade Level: K4-2 To skip the introduction, go to 2:43 Addresses Physical Education Standard 1 ("Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.") Part 1 focuses on teaching students the words of the story. Part 2 has the teacher reading the students the story and the students act out the part of the story through movement. Parts 1 and 2 should be done on separate days. Shared as part of the Active Schools Initiative, which provides strategies to teachers and students for motivating students to be physically active outside of their physical education classes. http://dpi.wi.gov/sspw/physicaled.html Video produced by Milwaukee Public Schools with support from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. TPR Tips & Tricks!

04:47
Here are some TPR tips and tricks I recorded to help you with ideas, happy teaching! NOTE: I know that when I am giving the example of A sounds like 'a' (should be /a/) for you guys, that I was wrong, haha. With my mountain accent I don't always pronounce it like /a/ when I'm speaking. Example: Do you have a book? It sounds more like, "Do you have uh book?" I had just been teaching blending sounds with an upper level student, so I was probably stuck there :) P.S. My dog says bye at the end! :D

Put your right hand on your left knee, your left hand on your right. Your knees move in and out. Your hands stay tight. Now keep on with your moving but switch hands on your knees. Keep on moving in and out till we say freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. Put one hand across your shoulder one hand across your back. Now jump in place. Do you like it like that? Now switch hands across your shoulders and switch hands across your back. Now just be nimble, just be quick, just like Jack. C’mon, jump and freeze. C’mon, jump and freeze. C’mon, jump and freeze. C’mon, jump and freeze. Everybody shake your body from your head down to your feet. And don’t stop shaking until we stop the beat. Shake it to the east and shake it to the west. Shake it, shake it, shake it with my friends who are the best. C’mon, shake and freeze. C’mon, shake and freeze. C’mon, shake and freeze. C’mon, shake and freeze. Put your right hand on your head, your left on someone’s knee. Now turn once in a circle and buzz like a bee. Now turn the other way, don’t let go or lose your spot. Keep turning left, keep turning right until the music stops. C’mon, turn and freeze. C’mon, turn and freeze. C’mon, turn and freeze. C’mon, turn and freeze. “Alright, you can move now.” http://www.youtube.com/user/thelearningstation
Teaching Strategies -- TPR

04:10
Modified version of Total Physical Response aimed at teaching AP Literature and Composition students eight types of imagery, then having students identify and cite examples of imagery after having read Robert Frost's "After Apple-picking." This is a strategy that I've used the last two years in my classes and it's proven to be incredibly engaging and develops a deep nexus between these words and their understanding of these terms.

I tried many times to make a video of one of my classes, but I never liked the stuff I got. Finally somebody nailed it on the head! This video shows how much I love teaching kids. I'll do ANYTHING to make them laugh! I feel right at home with them because I'm still a kid! I'm one of them, and they can feel that. I really don't like teaching adults that much anymore and you'll understand why after you watch this. This was shot in July of 2011 with an iPhone.

Warm-Up Activities - "Teacher Says"

http://www.course.eslinsider.com Get certified to teach English to kids with this online TEFL course: This is a fun warm-up activity for teaching very young children. It would probably work for some up until age 10. It works best for the very young and low level students. It's good for teaching body parts and commands. "Teacher Says" is a super fun activity to do with young kids. It works especially well with Kindergarteners to about 3rd grade. When their level gets to high it becomes boring since the kids can follow along and understand. Kids love this game and it's a way also to practice commands, body parts and basic classroom exercises. This video was filmed in a kindergarten in Sapadong, Korea. _____________________________________________________ ESLinsider serves up fresh resources for ESL teachers: how-to videos, online TEFL courses, interviews with ESL teachers in Asia, ebooks and a blog. Body Parts Activities - ビクター先生の授業 - Tutorial for the Elementary School ALT - 14

11:10
Catch my general vlog here: http://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD4EF98B73A40D149&feature=plpp Please join my Facebook Page in order to keep updated more frequently and get in contact with me easily: https://www.facebook.com/bikutaasenseinojugyou The latest video is up... a bit long, I admit... but, it covers ideas and activities for body parts that can span for two complete lessons. In fact, these are the two current lessons I am using for my second graders at the moment (one lesson for body parts introduction, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes with new body parts introduced and the "Touch your..." game I mentioned; one lesson for the facial body parts introduction, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes with all the new body parts introduced, and Simon Says). So, the body parts I review include: neck, stomach, arm(s), elbow(s), finger(s), leg(s) and foot. While the facial body parts I review include: eyebrow(s), cheek(s), chin, lip(s), teeth, and tongue. Introducing the new body parts proved to be difficult the first time I ever tried. My second graders didn't really retain any of the information. I eventually began introducing them in this manner, and it just clicked... my students found the words easy to remember and to understand. In fact, during lunch with them... they were repeating the body parts without me asking them... so, it made me really proud of the way I taught these lessons. Though I use the flashcards (provided by my company), they really aren't absolutely necessary. Simply using your own body and gestures is all the students really need to comprehend. As for the activities I use for when I teach these lessons, they include: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (http://youtu.be/AQxWmkQi-CU) with the new words Simon Says (http://youtu.be/qG2MlRCqHsU) and a game I simply call 'Touch Your...' My students have really enjoyed these activities, so please use them if you'd like! Hopefully this video gives you ideas on how you may introduce new body parts to your students! I'd love to hear from you viewers... tell me how the lesson went and what gestures worked for you! If you're interested in future videos, please hit that subscribe button to stay updated and catch newer videos as they're posted! Like always... I appreciate the views, support and feedback! Please follow me on Twitter too! https://twitter.com/vicky_vic The song used in the intro/end is the "Hello Song" from the Apricot "Let's Sing Together" CD I use at school.

The songs I'm using here are from: Dream English: https://www.youtube.com/user/DreamEnglishKids Super Simple Songs: https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperSimpleSongs My videos are vocabulary-based for conversation practice. In my young students class I like to get the kids active and in the mind frame of remembering the past English words at the beginning of class. It's a great reinforcement for vocabulary and gives them autonomy to use the words that they have heard elsewhere. I suspect that it gives the kids motivation to listen for words related to that topic outside of class. In the video, I am only showing one topic "Body Parts". However, I also use many other topics from the chapters we have learned in the coursebook.

First you introduce the new vocabulary, which is “jobs.” Then you can use so called “rhythmical drilling” to make this very important part of the language acquisition more fun. “A pilot and a plane match together, perfect! Now, look for a doctor! Where is the doctor?” - these “TPR” (total physical response) games follow, because you want to check, whether your children understand the meaning of these new words. “Speaking practise” activities come at the end. Have fun!
