Ancient Olympic Games / History and Origin

05:00
The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included. The victors of these early games were crowned with wreaths from a sacred olive tree that grew behind the temple of Zeus. According to tradition this tree was planted by Hercules (Heracles), founder of the games. The winners marched around the grove to the accompaniment of a flute while admirers chanted songs written by a prominent poet.

1984 Olympic Torch Relay Documentary - AT&T Archives

30:42
See more from the AT&T Archives at http://techchannel.att.com/archives The 1984, Summer Olympic Games was a turning point. With this event, which took place in Los Angeles in the summer of 1984, the Olympics took a new, more commercialized turn — ;these Games were the beginning of the modern sponsorshop age. While the Games had had sponsorships before (even as far back as 1908), these Games were so profitable for L.A. Olympic Committee that they had a surplus of over 200 million dollars after the event was over — which has continued to be used to support children's athletics programs ever since. In 1984, there were 34 official sponsors, 64 companies had "supplier" rights, and 65 companies were licensees. The incredibly-detailed post-1984 Olympic Games report gives a breakdown for everything about these particular Games you ever needed to know — it runs thousands of pages. You can read it at http://olympic-museum.de/o-reports/report1984.htm The 1984 torch relay was sponsored by AT&T, and was the very first to charge runners to participate, with fees of around $3K per kilometer (both decisions made by the L.A. Olympic Committee). But all $11 million raised by the relay went to kids' athletics charities. The relay was meant to be egalitarian, and any runner who could raise the money—through bake sales or whatnot—could run, and did. Children, moms, firemen, amateur-class runners, even Bruce Jenner and O.J.Simpson: more than 6,000 individuals carried the torch across 33 states on a 15,000 kilometer route. (The exact route can be found in Volume 1, Part 3 of the 1984 Olympic Report). The torch relay was organized by AT&T's PR agency, Burson-Marsteller, and was staffed primarily by volunteers from the Telephone Pioneers organization. AT&T's involvement in the Olympics dates back to the Los Angeles Summer Games in 1932, when a Bell Labs engineer, at the bequest of the head of the U.S. Olympic Committee, designed the "photo-finish"-type camera, which took simultaneous photos of the finish line and of a clock. The camera was precise to the hundredth of a second, and was used notably to determine a particularly close track-and-field race during the 1932 Games. The company has been involved in sponsorships of the U.S. Olympic Team and the Games since 1984, in various capacities. How Failure Got Me to the Olympics | Kate Hansen | TEDxBYU

15:15
Kate Hansen’s story is about overcoming mind games and self-doubts. She embraced the struggle of becoming an Olympic athlete in luge, an unlikely sport for a Southern California girl who loves to surf and hates the cold. Kate made the most of what was literally a crippling setback. What’s ironic is that Kate isn’t remembered for being one of the best lugers in the world—she’s remembered for the person she is, and for the positive and lighthearted person she chose to be at the Olympic games. Kate Hansen is a luge athlete, wannabe dancer, and world traveler. She competed for seven years around the world and her last stop was in Sochi, Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. She is currently attending college at Brigham Young University where she studies public relations and business. She loves skiing, people, and making fun of herself. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

The elder Johnson had moved from Raleigh, North Carolina, to California in 1893 for better economic and social opportunities. Johnson first competed in organized track and field events at Berendo Junior High School in Los Angeles. He achieved greater athletic success as a student at Los Angeles High School, competing in the sprints and the high jump. His skill as a high-jumper earned him a position on the 1932 U.S. Olympic team where he finished fourth. Under the present rules he would have won the silver medal. Berlin, Germany, then the capital of the National Socialist (Nazi) Third Reich, hosted the 1936 Summer Olympic Games. By that time anti-Semitic public policies had systematically removed Jews from nearly every aspect of German life. American participation in the "Nazi Olympics" was hotly debated in the United States; African Americans in particular were divided over sending athletes to Germany. While some maintained that a boycott of African-American athletes would illuminate the racially discriminatory practices of the United States, others argued that a triumphant demonstration of African-American athletic prowess would powerfully undermine both American and German racial insolence. The United States sent nineteen African Americans in total to the 1936 Olympic of which twelve were track and field performers (including two women) and they won 13 medals in total - 8 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze. Johnson won his gold medal in an Olympic record without failing any height, leading an American sweep of the medals - and he didn't even remove his tracksuit until the bar had reached 2.00 metres. After retiring from the high jump, he became a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Los Angeles, and in 1945 he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine. In 1946, while working as a ship's baker on board the Grace Line's "Santa Cruz," Johnson developed bronchial pneumonia. En route from the ship to a California hospital, Corny Johnson died, aged only 32.

Russian police create Olympic logo with cars after Russia's flag banned from Winter Olympics

01:11
With the Russian flag absent from the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games because of a doping scandal, traffic police and motorists in Kaliningrad, Russia, organized a flash mob to create the Olympic Games circle rings logo and the word Russia through choreographed parking of their cars. The official Russian Olympic Committee team was banned at the games held in South Korea after a series of doping scandals, with only Russian athletes who could prove they aren’t doping allowed to compete under a generic Olympic flag and the name “Olympic Athletes from Russia.” The patriotic display becomes more intriguing as it is a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea, separated from the rest of Russia. It was formerly known as the German city of Königsberg before and during the Second World War. ~ The Mob Reporter is a professional journalist bringing you real-life Mafia, police and true crime news and educational videos. ~ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/themobreporter?sub_confirmation=1 ~ For more information, visit http://www.adrianhumphreys.com. ~ To read my news exposés and journalism in the National Post, visit: http://news.nationalpost.com/author/ahumphreys/ As always, please like, share, comment and subscribe. Marketing PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics

04:43
평창 올림픽을 마케팅하라! NF PyeongChang Winter Olympics is drawing more anticipation, with prominent networks even including it in their top list of noticeable events for 2018. The alpine city is prepped and ready to welcome athletes and spectators... the task at hand is... creating more buzz. Which is why the government's employing a variety of methods to make sure we don't just tell the world about the games but SHOW them how amazing it will be. Cha Sang-mi zooms in on some of the brilliant marketing strategies. This is the newly remodeled Gangneung Station. Opened on December 22nd, it connects some of the PyeongChang Olympic venues with the capital, Seoul. As a part of PyeongChang's "cultural" Olympics, Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is hosting an exhibition of art banners at the station under the Olympic slogan "All Connected." (KOREAN) "I'm taking a picture of these banners because they look amazing. The drawings and cheer slogans are impressive, and just as the banners say, I hope the Olympics will be successful." The ministry selected 2-thousand-and-18 art pieces and messages of support related to PyeongChang 2018 and it's displayed numbers in the station to leave a good impression on its visitors. (KOREAN) "We are putting on the Arts Banner Exhibition before PyeongChang 2018 begins. Passengers who come to Gangneung Station are all satisfied. Our marketing technique using sophisticated art pieces... has been successful." Following on the cultural marketing in Pyeongchang, the Korea Tourism Organization has organized a memorable campaign at Seoul's Dongdaemun Design Plaza for visitors from around the world to actually take part in. The SangSang Stadium contains 2-thousand-and-17 figurines of real people from a hundred-and-fourteen different countries worldwide. (KOREAN) "I didn't know so many countries participated in the Olympics, or that the PyeongChang Olympics are drawing such an international interest." One spot's been left empty on purpose so that the visitors can edit in their own photo and make it complete. (Stand-up) “You can imagine you are one of the 2018 cheering supporters at this miniature replica of the Olympic plaza.” This unique promotion employs a state-of-the-art technology -- 3D printing. (KOREAN) 1 - "We had installed 3D printing booths twice in the past for this campaign. One in the Seoul neighborhood of Insadong and the other in London. We wanted this to be an impressive campaign." (ENGLISH) "I'm fascinated by them. My background is video game design and we did a lot of 3D printing, so looking all the figurines, I'm looking at all the details... just the whole display of it is beautiful. I really like it." "SangSang" in Korean means "imagine." The tourism agency gave it that name referring to the unlimited attractions Korea offers its foreign visiors. (ENGLISH) "Korea is one of the most wired countries in the world and/ I think anybody who has not been to Korea will be very surprised when they come here and see how technologically advanced Korea is." And another fun marketing involves social networking services. The PyeongChang 2018 mascots Soohorang and Bandabi greet visitors with high fives. The high-five campaign brings out smiles and offers visitors winter accessories like gloves and handwarmers when they upload pictures of them giving high-fives on their social media accounts. (ENGLISH) "Yeah, nowadays social media is part of the marketing..." (Stand-up) ed: Steve “The year of PyeongChang 2018 is finally here... and marketing methods like these are popping up all over the country as the Winter Olympics get closer and closer. First Ever Refugee Team All Set for Rio Olympics

01:56
The first-ever refugee team at the Olympic Games organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Sunday said they're ready for the upcoming world's top sports gathering in Rio. The 10-member team consists of players from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Syria. They will take part in judo, track field, swimming events among others. Anjelina Nada Lohalith, a South Sudanese runner who will compete in the 1,500-meter run, said she’s feeling great to be there as it’s a great opportunity for them, which she had never expected. She said she was extremely excited when she was informed to be selected by the IOC. "I was so happy by that time. Because I know now at least the refugees, they're no longer neglected, at least they're now realized that these people can still do the sport like the other people and they are given that opportunity," she said. Given the international refugee crisis sparked by ongoing wars in the Middle East and Africa, and the numerous athletes displaced by the fighting, the IOC decided to create a delegation to represent them: Team Refugee Olympic Athletes (ROA). And the ten athletes were chosen by the IOC out of 43 candidates. The ROA will compete under the IOC flag, but in all other aspects will be treated as any other team and is slated to march in the opening ceremony, before host team Brazil. "The final preparation is really just getting them settled into the Olympic village. It's all new for them and first time coming to the Olympic Games. It's really nice to be able to show them around the village, how it all works. And also introducing them to different athletes and exploring that side of it. But really now their final preparations are going to be in making sure that physically they're in their best shape. We have our physio and doctor here as well looking after the team to make sure that they're going to be in their best shape possible for the competition day," said Sophie Jane Edington, ROA spokesperson. At the press briefing, some refugee athletes said the Rio Olympics is a starting point in their lives. And they hope to return to the places they're now living to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Some wish the ROA will have become things of the past by that time. An official of the UN Refugee Agency said the first ROA is painted as an effort made by the international community to solve the refugee issue. "[Those competitions with the participation of refugee athletes] can show us their capabilities to get over difficulties and make their ways. They're not different from you or me. So they can make achievements and contribute to the whole society if they're given opportunities," said Luiz Fernando Godinho Santos, spokesman of the UN Refugee Agency to Brazil. The competitions in which the ROA will turn up are expected to run from Saturday till August 20. A Conversation with the head of Pyeongchang's Organizing Committee

02:39
As we edge closer to the climax of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the spotlight gradually shifts to the next host city -- the Korean resort town of Pyeongchang. To hear what Pyeongchang has learnt from Sochi -- and what to expect during the closing ceremony, Arirang News' Song Ji-sun sat down with the head of Pyeongchang's Organizing Committee. For the over 2-hundred personnel dispatched to Sochi from Pyeongchang nothing is too big or too small to go unchecked or unobserved. The pressure is on, as in less than four years time, the eyes of the world will be focused on whether Pyeongchang is ready to take up the mantle as an Olympic host city. As the next in line, how would the chief organizer of PyeongChang 2018 rate the way the Sochi Games have been run? "Overall, we believe it was a successful Olympic Games. Sochi 2014 had all the big venues in one place at the Olympic Park. The weather and the volunteers were also very pleasant. Pyeongchang is more compact due to the fact that all our clusters are within 30 minutes of each other, but after studying the way it is organized here, we want to reinforce the efficiency of our venues." With the curtain drawing down on Sochi, the world will watch as the Olympic flag is passed to the Korean delegation during Sunday's closing ceremony. The ceremony is expected to culminate with a grand performance of Korean dance and various mixes of Korea's traditional song, Arirang. "Korea is relatively less well-known than many other countries around the world. So we want to incorporate that mysterious, oriental side when introducing Pyeongchang. And as PyeongChang 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the Seoul Summer Olympics in 1988 -- we want to portray Korea - now a developed country, from a country that was catching up with others three decades ago." Kim adds it is crucially important Korea does more than just host the Games. He says the nation's athletes need to win medals. "Aside from everything else, what really counts is how well the host country's athletes do. Russia has succeeded in that up until now, and I want to stress that Korea must work together to boost our chances. I've seen the potential we have, not just in skating but in winter sliding events and freestyle skiing. I'm sure Korean athletes can make Pyeongchang their stage in four years time." Song Ji-sun, Arirang News, Sochi.
