Steam Engine History

09:17
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Since the late 1700s steam engines have become a major source of mechanical power. The first applications were removing water from mines. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. Steam engines could also be applied to vehicles such as traction engines and the railway locomotives which are commonly just called steam engines outside America. The stationary steam engine was a key component of the Industrial Revolution, allowing factories to locate where water power was unavailable. Today steam turbines generate about 90% of the electric power in the United States using a variety of heat sources. Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated into steam in a boiler until it reaches a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler. In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either the integrated steam plants (including boilers etc.) such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine. Specialized devices such as steam hammers and steam pile drivers are dependent on steam supplied from a separate boiler.

Steam Power Documentary 2017 HD - History of Steam Engines

38:14
This HD Documentary looks at Steam and Steam Power. It's full steam ahead when we drop in at Jay Leno's garage as Jay fires up two of his classic steam cars and takes viewers for a couple of rides. Jay also shows off his 11-ton steam engine built in 1860, back when pigs had to be slaughtered to keep it lubricated. In northern Nevada, fire up a coal burning boiler and get a 100-year-old steam locomotive chugging across the rugged landscape. In New Orleans, board an authentic paddlewheel steamboat. Trek to the Southern California desert where geothermal steam rushes up from the ground and drives electricity producing turbines, powering over 300,000 homes. In New York City, find out why manmade steam surges into some of the world's most famous skyscrapers. Steam clean some very dirty machines, and do a little laundry, too. And ride a steam-driven carousel and play with some strange, steam-powered robots that are part of a movement called--what else--"steampunk."

The Steam Engine ~ James Watt

14:30
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Using boiling water to produce mechanical motion goes back over 2000 years, but early devices were not practical. The Spanish inventor Jerónimo de Ayanz y Beaumont patented in 1606 the first steam engine. In 1698 Thomas Savery patented a steam pump that used steam in direct contact with the water being pumped. Savery's steam pump used condensing steam to create a vacuum and draw water into a chamber, and then applied pressurized steam to further pump the water. Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric engine was the first commercial true steam engine using a piston, and was used in 1712 for pumping in a mine. James Watt,(30 January 1736 (19 January 1736 OS) – 25 August 1819) was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the Newcomen steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world.

Working Model of Stephenson's STEAM ENGINE made of GLASS ! Rare!

02:17
Highlights: * The crankshaft is glass. The piston is glass. The counterweight that makes the wheel spin evenly is glass. Imagine that everything is made out of glass. * There are no sealants used. All is accomplished by a perfectly snug fit. The gap between the piston and its compartment is so small, that the water that condensates from the steam seals it shut! * Notice the elaborate excessive steam exhaust system next to the piston. * The piston is the most arduous part to make due to to extreme level of precision needed. Its parts have to be so accurate that no machinery is of use here. The piston and its cylinder must be hand sanded to perfection, and they are very likely to crack in the process! On average, three out of four crack. This Model of Stephenson's Steam Engine was made in 2008 by master glassblower Michal Zahradník. James Watt (Steam Engine) - Greatest Inventors of All Time

00:55
James Watt may have been the single most responsible person in bringing about the Industrial Revolution. He made the steam engine dramatically more efficient by introducing a separate condenser that avoided wasting energy, which radically improved the machine’s power output and transformed it into the workhorse of factory production. In 1781, after much financial hardship and struggle, Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. In a flash, new classes of industry were economically viable, setting off a rapid period of immense economic and social change across world. Watt also developed the concept of horsepower, and invented the document copier, patenting the device in 1780. The principle on which the machine is based remained in use until the arrival of modern photocopiers and the watt unit of power is named after him.

From Steam Machine to Locomotive I THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

06:32
The invention of the steam machine changed the world. Many smart engineers worked on perfecting the efficiency of this groundbreaking technology. But who turned the simple principle of a steam engine into the speedy steel locomotives, frequenting thousands of kilometers of railroads and connecting the world during the Industrial Revolution? Soon steam boats and trains accelerated the world and furthered the ever prospering new world. To this day railways dominate many landscapes and trains connect millions of places. » The Complete PLAYLIST: http://bit.ly/TheIndustrialRevolution » More Videos: The History of Sound Recording: http://bit.ly/SoundRecordingHistory Reasons for the Industrial Revolution: http://bit.ly/IndustrialReasons » JOIN OUR COMMUNITY FOR MORE HISTORY KNOWLEDGE! Worlds most powerful steam engine ever built. 12000 Horse Power. The River Don Engine, Sheffield

03:15
The worlds most powerful steam engine ever built. 12000 Horse Power (8.9 MW) The River Don Engine is located in the Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, UK This massive engine weighs 420 tons and stands 28 foot high, 40 foot long ! I've seen some impressive Victorian engineering in the past but this is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. The sheer power in this beast has to be seen in person. See it in steam Monday - Thursday 12pm and 2pm and Sunday 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. It is not always running though due to maintenance so check with the museum first if traveling a long way to see it. This is a stationary steam powered mill for making steel armour plate for the hulls of battleships. It is able to reverse from full speed in just 2 seconds. The rapid reverse was an essential feature of an engine used for rolling, as delays would result in cooling of the workpiece. At 01:22 you can see just how quick it can stop and reverse. At 02:37 you will see how fast this engine can run. You can really feel the power in the floor now. Four identical mills were made but the other three have since been scrapped. There is a short video you can watch of this mill when it was still in use. This video display is near the entrance to the engine area. thanks Andy

Hero's Steam Engine (Aeolipile)

06:24
A description of history's first steam-powered device. Described and possibly invented by the Greek inventor Hero of Alexandria in the 1st century AD. A very similar and quite possibly the same device was described by the Roman architect Vitruvius in the 1st century BC as an existing invention. The basic technology of this device draws heavily on the earlier work by the Greek 3rd century BC inventor Ctesibius and was possibly already invented by him, but it's impossible to determine since none of Ctesibius' works survive today...

History Of Steam Locomotives Documentary - History TV

42:25
History Of Steam Locomotives Documentary - History TV A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine,[1] first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines. A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks.[2] In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars. Traditionally, locomotives pulled trains from the front. However, push-pull operation has become common, where the train may have a locomotive (or locomotives) at the front, at the rear, or at each end. Prior to locomotives, the motive force for railroads had been generated by various lower-technology methods such as human power, horse power, gravity or stationary engines that drove cable systems. The first successful locomotives were built by Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick. In 1804 his unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren ironworks, near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Although the locomotive hauled a train of 10 long tons (11.2 short tons; 10.2 t) of iron and 70 passengers in five wagons over nine miles (14 km), it was too heavy for the cast iron rails used at the time. DIY Homemade Steam Engine Running - Made Without Any Machining

03:45
My first steam engine works! Was built with parts found in my junk bin from things I took apart and things you can buy at a hardware store. It took me two days to build this but I had been thinking about it for months! I measured the electrical power output with the same generator I use on my stirling engines and the power is about 0.1 watts. So it's less powerful than my stirling engines(running on about 5PSI of vacuum, pressure still needs evaluation). But at least it works! It will probably be a bit more powerful when I build a boiler and get some real pressure to it. Thank you for watching!

One thing that you have to remember from your science classes is that gases expand and contract very rapidly indeed, making this sort of engine practical. Stirling engines are not very powerful nor do they have great power to weight ratios. I know of one annual boat race that takes place in England on a river using stirling engines, and it is somewhat sedate. The History of Jet Engines documentary

44:59
The modern jet engine took us higher and faster. Meet the two scientists who invented it at the same time in two different places. Jet engines date back to the invention of the aeolipile before the first century AD. This device directed steam power through two nozzles to cause a sphere to spin rapidly on its axis. So far as is known, it did not supply mechanical power and the potential practical applications of this invention did not receive recognition. Instead, it was seen as a curiosity. Jet propulsion only gained practical applications with the invention of the gunpowder-powered rocket by the Chinese in the 13th century as a type of firework, and gradually progressed to propel formidable weaponry. However, although very powerful, at reasonable flight speeds rockets are very inefficient and so jet propulsion technology stalled for hundreds of years. In common parlance, the term jet engine loosely refers to an internal combustion airbreathing jet engine. These typically feature a rotating air compressor powered by a turbine, with the leftover power providing thrust via a propelling nozzle — this process is known as the Brayton thermodynamic cycle. Jet aircraft use such engines for long-distance travel. Early jet aircraft used turbojet engines which were relatively inefficient for subsonic flight. Modern subsonic jet aircraft usually use more complex high-bypass turbofan engines. These engines offer high speed and greater fuel efficiency than piston and propeller aeroengines over long distances. History Channel's Modern Marvels S05E06
The Surprising Future of Steam Power | Robert Green | TEDxMissionViejo

18:00
Robert is devoted full time to developing inventions, writing and applying for patents on a wood-working system, a windmill, a rotary conversion device and a steam engine (six patents). Here he shares his idea about how the Electrical Grid and be replaced with a simple steam engine, that not only creates clean energy but saves dramatically on energy waste. At age 15, he hitchhiked to Chicago to begin a new life on his own. Mechanical skills learned on the farm provided the means to stay off the streets and utilize that knowledge. In 1964 he founded Turin Bicycle Company with smoke-damaged bicycles he obtained from a warehouse fire. The business flourished and Robert sold it the following year. The next few years were spent traveling and living in Europe. After returning to the US, he started a new business- Green Construction Company. With industrial machinery purchased from failed factories, Robert created custom cabinetry, furniture and architectural pieces as well as sculpture. He learned many new skills and became professional in carpentry, joinery/cabinetry, furniture design electrical, plumbing, machining, mechanics, metal casting, jewelry making, masonry, tile setting, welding, fine art (sculpting, painting, drafting, cartooning and drawing) as well as mechanical engineering, patent writing, and business management. How to drive a Steam Powered Locomotive

04:52
The depot is located in the Historic 1887 Rock Island Depot, Old Abilene Town, south of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum. When the steam engine is not running, the regular tourist train is pulled by an Alco S-1 locomotive that used to work for the Hutchinson Northern Railroad (HNRR). The locomotive, #4, was donated to the A&SVRR by the HNRR when it was retired. The locomotive is a type normally used for switching and has 660 horsepower. Dinner trains are operated once a month. The trip travels along an old Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad line that used to run from Herington to Salina. Currently the train operates on approximately 5.5 miles (8.9 km) of trackage between Abilene and Enterprise. At Enterprise passengers are allowed to explore the caboose and locomotive. Seating in the diner or in open-sided gondola cars is available. Once a month an all-day excursion between Abilene and Woodbine is operated. At Enterprise passengers are transferred to a hyrail bus, which can travel on both road and rail. After a short tour of Enterprise the bus is placed on a second section of trackage that extends east out of Enterprise, travels through Pearl and ends in Woodbine. The trip is narrated. At Woodbine lunch is provided as part of the ticket price. After lunch the bus travels back to Enterprise with stops to showcase some of the older stone work buildings still located in the area. Upon arrival in Enterprise, the afternoon train returns to Abilene.

110HP Case Steam Tractor Pull Pinckneyville Illinois August 15 2014

02:06
UPDATE!! Some information about the engine from the owner Josh Maschhoff: "We run at 150 psi. The Engine weighs around 42500lbs loaded with coal and water. Torque is 3000 ft lbs at 240 rpm The sled was definitely weighted and i know from experience first hand that the engine can drag the sled with the weight box all the way up and the bars dropped." Don't worry about the fire hazard. What you see is a very exaggerated amount of burning embers coming from the smokestack. The sparks are created as a night spectacle for entertainment. Before this pull, sawdust was added to the firebox to enhance the night "spark show." Having said that back in the day there was always a risk of fire. There was less of a risk during plowing season. The highest risk was during harvest when the steam engines returned to the fields to thresh (separate) the grain from their stalks, in typically dry fields. Weeks before the steam engines arrived the grain was cut and bundled by binders. These mechanized machines looked the front of modern "combines" but binders only cut and a bound the grain. The crops were cut close to the ground by the binder leaving the grain (heads) connected to the shaft. These bundles were approximately 8" in diameter and were about 3' tall. After the crops were cut, these bundles were stacked in small piles called "shocks." These shocks contained maybe 7 to 12 bundles and scattered all over the field. The shocks were left in the field until the grain was dry enough to separate. The threshermen traveled from farm to farm to thresh each farmers grain. Most individual farmers could not afford a steam traction engine so the threshermen provided this service to the farmer. On threshing day wagons were brought to the field and would load the shocks of grain and haul it to the threshing machine where it was placed quite a distance (and upwind) from the steam engine that provided the power for the machine to do its work. The steam engine provided power to the threshing machine via an extremely long belt to keep any embers away from the dry chaff and straw that was separated from the grain. The shock piles of crop were gathered as they were needed and not all gathered up and piled in one place at one time. That way, if there was a fire it would be small and contained to a small portion of the harvest and not all of it. The steam engines were also outfitted spark arresters while threshing. Not to mention these steam engines required water so water was generally available should a fire break out. Also the steam engines would burn the straw which was waste from process of threshing the grain. One day, I hope to make a video of these separate processes that is now preformed by a single combine. As for now, if you watch the movie "Of Mice and Men" with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich you can see threshing in action. I have posted another video of it that includes three synchronized videos that were shot from three different angles that night. (One angle is shot from a drone flying high in the air that can be spotted above the engine towards the end of this video. If you liked this video surely you would like that video even more. http://youtu.be/_8dH853fs_0 God Bless and thank you for watching.

First Steam Powered Airplane

02:21
The Besler brothers developed steam engines that they hoped would be adopted for all modes of transportation including airplanes. In 1933, George D. Besler and William J. Besler's prototype steam biplane, based on a Travel Air 2000, flew several times at Oakland airport. It was powered by a two-cylinder, 150 hp (110 kW) reciprocating engine designed by the Doble Steam Motors Company and Besler weighing about 500 lbs. and was capable of short takeoff and landing, (STOL) operation due to the ease of reversing the thrust. Popular Science gushed over their feat. "Over the Oakland, CA Airport, a few days ago, a silent planet slanted across the sky trailing a thin ribbon of white vapor. Spectators heard the pilot shout a greeting from the air. They saw him flash past, skimming the ground at 100 miles an hour. They watched him bank into a turn, slide to a landing, and, with the propeller spinning backward, roll to a stop in less than 100 feet. They had seen, for the first time in history, a man fly on wings powered by steam! Two brothers, George and William Besler, the former a geologist 31 years old, and the latter a mechanical engineer, two years younger, have achieved the dream of Maxim, Langley, and other pioneers of flight. Through their work, the steam-driven airplane, long talked about, long planned, has become a reality."

Presented by the J.I. Case Company, this is a film history of the steam tractor and thresher. Contains rare historic footage of steam powered traction engines as well as footage from demonstration events in the 1950s. The Case Corporation was a manufacturer of construction equipment and agricultural equipment. Founded by Jerome I. Case as the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company, it operated under that name for most of a century. For another 66 years it was the J.I. Case Company, and was often called simply Case. In the late 19th century, Case was one of America's largest builders of steam engines, producing self-propelled portable engines, traction engines and steam tractors. It was a major producer of threshing machines and other harvesting equipment. In the 20th century, Case was among the 10 largest builders of farm tractors for many years. In the 1950s its construction equipment line became its primary focus, with agricultural business second. Case's corporate entities and brands changed repeatedly in the 1980s and 1990s. When its corporate parent, Tenneco, bought International Harvester's agricultural equipment division and merged it into Case, the J.I. Case Company continued, but it began using the Case IH brand. In the 1990s it changed names several more times (each name including "Case") before its merger into CNH Global ended its history as a distinct entity. Various CNH brands continue to make use of the Case name, such as Case CE and Case IH.
