My Top 15 (Side-Scrolling) Beat 'em ups
Here's my top 15 beat 'em ups, guys. Hopefully you'll find some new games among the usual suspects. I'm a huge fan of the genre, and it was tough narrowing it down to just 15. Let me know your favourites in the comments! Noticed after uploading that the sound for no. 10 is very low, so apologies in advance.

Obscure Arcade Games Ep. 1
Here is part one of a five-part series taking a look at some rather obscure or little-discussed arcade games. I tried to select games that had some interesting features, graphics or gameplay and were generally not covered by great channels like Game Sack and Cinemassacare already. Enjoy and subscribe to receive the other 8 parts as I post them! 1 on 1 Government by Tecmo (2000) This is a basketball game that was exclusive to Japan. What's unique about it is it plays a bit like a 3D fighter. The camera is usually locked in a close-up side view like Tekken and you must manouver around your opponent to make a NBA Jam- style dunk, a fancy layup or a 3 pointer. I love the part where I steal my own shot out of the air and get a violation for it. For some reason the computer tends to go for 3 from half-court or more shortly after they steal the ball from you. An enjoyable game for fans of fighters and arcade sports games. Aaargh! by Arcadia (1988) This game plays a bit like Rampage but from a 2.5D perspective. You eat people, fight off military, destroy buildings and collect the extremely large pieces of food that appear after said buildings crumble. Apparently the goal is to find and grab the egg that's inside one of the buildings. Unfortunately I had no idea the game would switch to a primitive 2D fighter once the egg appears so I lost big time. In the second level I couldn't figure out how to cross the river. Overall I enjoyed this one even if the sound and "music" was pretty grating. Oh and your guy explodes into bloody bits when you die and this game was out 4 years before Mortal Kombat. Air Rescue by Sega (1992) Air Rescue is unique for a couple of reasons. The first-person perspective looks well-done for its time (Doom hadn't even come out yet). The soldiers that you rescue have a hilariously bad-looking animation when they run toward your chopper with their mouths open. Once they enter the chopper they look even worse and I laughed every time. I found myself wanting to continue to play despite this distraction. Shooting up other ground and flying vehicles was satisfying and the controls were spot-on. Worth a play if you enjoy games like Starfox or After Burner. Arabian Fight by Sega (1992) This is an odd one but I really enjoy it. This beat-em-up was released by Sega in 1992 but never ported to a home console for some reason. Some things that set this apart from other beat-em-ups are its extremely excessive use of parallax scrolling and brief anime cutscenes that are integrated throughout the gameplay. The cutscenes play as enemies enter the screen and also whenever you do your magic attack. My guess is if Sega were to port this, they would have had to put it on the Sega CD (which was released the year prior) due to these anime snippets and the parallax scrolling. As much as I enjoyed this, it is sometimes difficult to get your character on the same plane as the enemy you're fighting and if you're off a little then you won't make contact. Bells & Whistles aka Detana!! TwinBee by Konami (1991) This game may not be all that obscure now since it's been released as a downloadable title on PSN, Xbox Live and Nintendo's download shop, but I had never heard of it until then. This is a vertical shooter with very colorful and beautifully animated graphics. Power ups are in the form of bells and they pop out of clouds that you shoot. If you shoot the bells, you can sometimes change their color and the colored bells give you better power ups. You can also charge up your shot and release it as a powerful blast. I really enjoy just taking in the vibrant world the game places you in and the bosses are unique and fun to fight. Biomechanical Toy by Gaelco (1995) This game took me by surprise with its fluid animation, responsive controls and exciting gameplay. I enjoy the Metal Slug series and this feels right at home but also throws in some platforming elements that remind me of Sonic the Hedgehog (like the spring boards.) This is definitely one I'll be going back to to finish up.

1987 Rastan Arcade Old School Game Playthrough retro game
1987 Rastan Arcade Old School Game Playthrough retro game Rastan, originally released as Rastan Saga (ラスタンサーガ?) in Japan, is a fantasy-themed side-scrolling action game originally released for the arcades in 1987 by Taito and later ported to various platforms. The player controls a barbarian warrior who has embarked on a quest to slay a dragon. While on his way to the dragon's lair, Rastan must fight hordes of enemy monsters based on mythical creatures such as chimeras and harpies. The controls of Rastan consists of an eight-way joystick and two buttons for attacking and jumping. By using the joystick in combination with either buttons, the player can determine the height of Rastan's jumps, as well as the direction where he swings his weapon (including downwards while jumping). The game uses a health gauge system along with limited lives, although certain obstacles (such as falling into a body of water or being crushed by a spiked ceiling) will instantly kill Rastan regardless of how much health he has left. There are a total six rounds, each consisting of three areas: an outdoor scene, a castle scene and a throne room where the player must confront the stage's boss. The backgrounds of the outdoor areas feature broad landscapes with changing sunlight effects with detail. The game's bosses (names according to the MSX2 version[1]) consists of Graton (a skeletal warrior who wields a halberd), Slay (a demonic swordsman who can sprout wings), Symplegades (a wizard), Laios (a dragon knight), the Hydra (a five-headed snake) and the final boss, the Dragon. The player can pick up any item by touching them, as well as new weapons by striking them with his current one. All the weapons and power-ups picked by Rastan will be equipped only for a limited time. When Rastan picks up any equipable item, an icon will appear on the lower right corner of the screen as an indicator of the item's effect until it wears out. Rastan can only wield one weapon at a time (which consists of a mace, an axe and a fireball-shooting sword in addition to his standard sword), as well as only one type of protector (a shield, a mantle or a body armor), but other items (such as the necklace and ring) can be worn at the same time. There are also jewels that gives out bonus points, as well potion bottles that will restore or deplete the player's health depending on the color. The rare golden sheep's head will restore Rastan's health completely. Arcade Game: Kung-Fu Master (1984 Irem)
A side-scrolling Beat 'em up arcade video game where you as the Hero name Thomas and your girlfriend have been attacked by unknown guys and Silva have kidnapped with a ransom note where she is being held at the Devil's Temple by someone with the name Mysterious X. You must use punches and kicks to attack and overwhelm a pack of enemies that trying to stop you from rescuing her. Fearsome bosses wait for Thomas at end of each floor and must be defeated before moving on to the next level. Also known as Spartan X in Japan. This is the world's first sideways-scrolling beat-em-up and the first released for the arcades which would later inspires games like Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and Final Fight. This arcade video game has element's from Bruce Lee's 1978 Game of Death movie. Gameplay starts at 2:34 No Cheats used at all. Only savestates used. Update: Re-uploaded and redone the entire game to fix sound issues that happen in the last previous video. Played on MAME 0.162. Sound is slightly broken on latest versions of MAME on all games running on Irem's m62 hardware. Sadly, Kung-Fu Master was one of them. Better play this game on MAME v0.162 or older until the mamedevs fix this problem. Note: This game restarts back to the beginning endless after you've beaten all five levels. So I only played as far as I can before I quit afterwards.

Side-scrolling beat 'em ups before Final Fight (1986-1989)
This video tries to reflect the early history of side-scrolling, multi-plane beat 'em ups, also known as brawlers, before Final Fight made the genre take a big step further. Also, I must note that I haven't included one-plane beat 'em ups because then I would have had to focus on an extremely big library of games, including games which could be classified more as "platformers" but which have a "beating your opponent" element, thus generating some conflict. I have included, however, games in which your main/only weapon is a sword, because they are generally considered beat 'em ups by most of the gaming community and also employ almost the same gameplay as any other beat 'em up. I got the inspiration to make this video from Hardcore Gaming 101's "Pre-Street Fighter II Fighting Games" article. It's true that pre-Final Fight beat 'em ups aren't as obscure as the fighting games that preceded Street Fighter II, but still, I'm sure you will find this timeline interesting from an historical point of view on how the genre began/evolved. Hope you enjoy this video. Also, feel free to suggest any beat 'em up game I might have left behind, I'm always glad to discover new stuff. List of games included: Renegade / Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio-Kun (Japan) - Technos Japan City Adventure Touch: Mystery of Triangle - Compile Double Dragon - Technos Japan Kozure Ookami - Nichibutsu Target: Renegade - Ocean P.O.W.: Prisoners of War - SNK The Adventures of Bayou Billy - Konami Kabuki Z - Kaneko Samurai-Fighter Shingen - Jaleco Dynamite Dux - Sega Double Dragon II: The Revenge - Technos Japan Ninja Gaiden - Tecmo Tough Turf - Sega/Sunsoft River City Ransom - Technos Japan Crime Fighters - Konami Wild Fang - Tecmo Renegade III: The Final Chapter - Ocean Dynasty Wars / Tenchi wo Kurau (Japan) - Capcom Golden Axe - Sega Gang Wars - Alpha Denshi DJ Boy - Kaneko Hachoo! - Jaleco Skull & Crossbones - Atari Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Konami S.P.Y. One of the most interesting games I played in the past was Armor Alley. It had a unique blend of Arcade Side Scroller action, coupled with some Real Time Strategy on your part. Your goal was to destroy the Enemies Base while preventing them from destroying yours.

Mappy Arcade Game
In this classic side-scrolling platform arcade game, your main character Mappy the mouse must collect the personal possessions that have been pocketed and scattered by a criminal cat syndicate. To recover these possessions of varying point value, you will navigate six levels of a house while actively pursued by the Meowkies, the largest enemy group attempting to thwart your mission. Use the flashing heavy metal doors to keep these opponents away, as each time one is opened, a heavy gust of wind will send the cats out of the house for good. Arcade: Jungle King/Jungle Hunt & Pirate Pete (1982 Taito)
A platform/run and jump scrolling game consisted of 4 levels where you play as tarzan out to rescue a woman. It was the first 'side-scrolling, jumping & attacking game with a humanoid character', appearing in arcades three years before Miyamoto's classic "Super Mario Bros.". This was also the first video game ever to feature Tarzan as a playable character. But, Taito never bothered to get permission from the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs, so they were sued for copyright infringement for using Tarzan's likeness. So this title quickly went out of production, and is rather rare today. They later reworked the graphics and released this game as "Jungle Hunt". Jungle King gameplay begins at 00:06 Jungle Hunt, a Clone Version of Jungle King and gameplay begins at 6:02 Pirate Pete, a reworked version Jungle King and gameplay begins at 11:49. Note: No cheats were used, Just Save States.
1988 Silkworm (Arcade) Game Playthrough Video Game
Silkworm is a classic side scrolling shooter, developed by Tecmo and first released for arcade in 1988. In 1989 it was ported to the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and NES (1990) systems by The Sales Curve and released by Virgin Mastertronic. Silkworm also spawned what many consider to be a spiritual successor to the game - SWIV.[citation needed] While SWIV was not a direct sequel, it followed the same core gameplay design of a helicopter/jeep team, albeit as a vertically scrolling shooter instead of a horizontally scrolling one. SWIV was described in the game's manual to mean both "Special Weapons Intercept Vehicles" and "Silkworm IV".

1996 Osman (Arcade) Game Playthrough Video Game
Osman, released in Japan as Cannon-Dancer (キャノンダンサー), is a side-scrolling action platforming game produced by Mitchell Corp. that was released exclusively as a coin-operated arcade game in 1996. Many ex-Capcom staff including Kouichi Yotsui (credited as Isuke), worked on the original arcade version of Strider and designed Osman as an unofficial sequel to Strider.[1] Yotsui directed both titles. In contrast to Strider's futuristic Kazakh-Soviet setting, Osman is set in a neon-lit cyberpunk Arabian setting, while Strider Hiryu is replaced by a Middle Eastern protagonist named Kirin who fights without any weapons.[2] 1UP.com included the game in its "Games to Play Before You Die" list.[3] The game's bizarre plot supposedly mocks director Kouichi Yotsui's experience at Capcom after Strider.

MASP Episode 1 (The Pilot) - Vendetta Arcade (1991) Side-Scrolling Beat 'em Up
Magnus and Stephen play... "Vendetta" in Magnus' place in Tokyo. This game is a little known, probably underrated side-scrolling beat'em up gem from the 1990's by Konami. Featuring a 4 player setup similar to the Turtles cabinets. Eclipsed by the likes of Final Fight and Streets of Rage 2 it never got a home console port... We forgot to mention it was a sequel to Crime Fighters, also a side-scrolling beat 'em up. Obviously.
