Elizabeth Tower holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower.[3] It celebrated its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009,[4] during which celebratory events took place.[5][6] The tower was completed in 1858 and has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Ben The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its tenants, the Palace lies on the Middlesex bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London. Its name, which derives from the neighbouring Westminster Abbey, may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex that was destroyed by fire in 1834, and its replacement New Palace that stands today. For ceremonial purposes, the palace retains its original style and status as a royal residence. The first royal palace was built on the site in the eleventh century, and Westminster was the primary London residence of the Kings of England until a fire destroyed much of the complex in 1512. After that, it served as the home of Parliament, which had been meeting there since the thirteenth century, and the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, based in and around Westminster Hall. In 1834, an even greater fire ravaged the heavily rebuilt Houses of Parliament, and the only structures of significance to survive were Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen's, the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft and the Jewel Tower. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Westminster

Big Ben & The Palace of Westminster

01:15
Arguably the most recognizable landmark in all of London, Big Ben stands tall along the River Thames, a historical sentinel, conjuring images of our favorite movies, TV shows and books. What may surprise you, however, is that Big Ben is not the name of this iconic clock tower, it is actually The Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben is the name of the bell that rests behind the clock face. The Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben are attached to the Palace of Westminster, which is the home to the British Houses of Parliament. Sharp eyed fans of the popular TV show Downton Abbey may also notice that the Palace of Westminster bares a striking resemblance to the real life Highclere Castle. That’s because shortly after completing work on the Houses of Parliament, architect Sir Charles Barry remodeled Highclere Castle and incorporated much of the same design in both. Thanks for watching! Palace of Westminster

01:08
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, is the meeting place of the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom—the House of Lords and the House of Commons. It lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the heart of the London borough of the City of Westminster, close to the historic Westminster Abbey and the government buildings of Whitehall and Downing Street. The name may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex most of which was destroyed in 1834, and its replacement New Palace that stands today; it has retained its original style and status as a royal residence for ceremonial purposes. At the north end of the Palace rises the most famous of the towers, the Clock Tower, commonly known as Big Ben. At 96 metres (316 ft), it is only slightly shorter than the Victoria Tower but much slimmer. It houses the Great Clock of Westminster, built by Edward John Dent on designs by amateur horologist Edmund Beckett Denison. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Westminster

Big Ben Clock Tower - London - England. Famous Landmarks. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower. The tower is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, renamed as such to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II (prior to being renamed in 2012 it was known as simply "Clock Tower"). The tower holds the second largest four-faced chiming clock in the world (Minneapolis City Hall being the first). The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London. The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower), named in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee year, more popularly known as Big Ben, was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834. The new Parliament was built in a Neo-gothic style. Although Barry was the chief architect of the Palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower, which resembles earlier Pugin designs, including one for Scarisbrick Hall. The design for the tower was Pugin's last design before his final descent into madness and death, and Pugin himself wrote, at the time of Barry's last visit to him to collect the drawings: "I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his bell tower & it is beautiful." The tower is designed in Pugin's celebrated Gothic Revival style, and is 315 feet (96.0 m) high. The main bell, officially known as the Great Bell, is the largest bell in the tower and part of the Great Clock of Westminster. The bell is better known by the nickname Big Ben. Along with the Great Bell, the belfry houses four quarter bells which play the Westminster Quarters on the quarter hours. In 2008 a survey of 2,000 people found that the tower was the most popular landmark in the United Kingdom. It has also been named as the most iconic film location in London. Big Ben and The Palace of Westminster - VIDEO PREVIEW (London, England)

04:16
A video of Big Ben and The Palace of Westminster! We decided to walk along the River Thames from West London for a few miles and take some photos and videos along the way! Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower as well. The tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012; previously, it was known simply as the Clock Tower. When completed in 1859, it was, says clockmaker Ian Westworth, “the prince of timekeepers: the biggest, most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world.” The tower had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. A British cultural icon, the tower is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London. The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its occupants, it is also known as the "heart of British politics". The Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London. Its name, which is derived from the neighbouring Westminster Abbey, may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex destroyed by fire in 1834, and its replacement, the New Palace that stands today. The palace is owned by the monarch in right of the Crown and for ceremonial purposes, retains its original status as a royal residence. The building is managed by committees appointed by both houses, which report to the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker. The first royal palace was built on the site in the 11th century, and Westminster was the primary residence of the Kings of England until fire destroyed much of the complex in 1512. After that, it served as the home of the Parliament of England, which had been meeting there since the 13th century, and also as the seat of the Royal Courts of Justice, based in and around Westminster Hall. In 1834, an even greater fire ravaged the heavily rebuilt Houses of Parliament, and the only significant medieval structures to survive were Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen's, the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft, and the Jewel Tower. The subsequent competition for the reconstruction of the Palace was won by the architect Charles Barry, whose design was for new buildings in the Gothic Revival style, specifically inspired by the English Perpendicular Gothic style of the 14th–16th centuries. The remains of the Old Palace (with the exception of the detached Jewel Tower) were incorporated into its much larger replacement, which contains over 1,100 rooms organised symmetrically around two series of courtyards and has a floor area of 112,476 m2 (1,210,680 sq ft). Part of the New Palace's area of 3.24 hectares (8 acres) was reclaimed from the Thames, which is the setting of its nearly 300-metre long (980 ft) façade, called the River Front. Barry was assisted by Augustus Pugin, a leading authority on Gothic architecture and style, who designed the interior of the Palace. Construction started in 1840 and lasted for 30 years, suffering great delays and cost overruns, as well as the death of both leading architects; works for the interior decoration continued intermittently well into the 20th century. Major conservation work has been carried out since then to reverse the effects of London's air pollution, and extensive repairs took place after the Second World War, including the reconstruction of the Commons Chamber following its bombing in 1941. The Palace is one of the centres of political life in the United Kingdom; "Westminster" has become a metonym for the UK Parliament, and the Westminster system of government has taken its name after it. The Elizabeth Tower, in particular, which is often referred to by the name of its main bell, Big Ben, is an iconic landmark of London and the United Kingdom in general, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, and an emblem of parliamentary democracy. The Palace of Westminster has been a Grade I listed building since 1970 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Big Ben London - Ever seen Big Ben at Night? Big Ben Clock Tower London - Big Ben Tour - UK

00:38
It might be one of the highlights of London and one of the buildings that people pose in front of when they come to visit this city; Big Ben is the most famous old building in London city that is still carrying its charm until today but is going through some renovations these days. Big Ben is a nickname given to the great clock tower that is located in London. It is situated at the north end of the Palace of Westminster that is found in the city and it is also just across London Eye. When we say that it is a nickname then it means that there should be an official name related to this tower; the official name was the Clock Tower but it was changed in 2012 to the Elizabeth Tower to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II - almost all the Londeners and the tourists coming to the city know it as Big Ben and you might never find someone referring to it with its official name. The completion of Big Ben happened back in 1859 and it was designed by Augustus Pugin. Back during that time, the clock of this tower was considered the biggest and the most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world. The tower stands at 315 feet and to reach the top there are 334 steps to be climbed. In 2009, this tower celebrated its 150th year anniversary - long time there! Every city or country in the world is recognized with specific buildings which are found in it and Big Ben is one of those British symbols that is found out there that even most of those movies which are filmed in London manage to bring one or more scenes that this tower appears in. Big Ben - or Elizabeth Tower - has been part of a Grade I listed building since 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. This make it more of a place that people will be eager to know more about and go to check in reality after seeing all those pictures which come on the internet or on television. Big Ben - or the Clock Tower as it was firstly named - was designed in the neo-gothic style and it was raised as part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire in 1834. Even though this building is one of the top touristic attractions that are found in London city along with Coca-Cola London Eye (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHtQq7wQTQc), Tower Bridge and London Bridge, it does not allow overseas tourists coming to London to enter it, only those local people and they should also book that in advance in order to be allowed to come inside and tour the place but since there is no lift found inside, they will need to climb all those stairs - actually the renovation done to the tower will include adding a lift to the building. According to some surveys done previously, Big Ben was considered the most famous touristic attraction in London and not just that, but it was also the most recognized symbol of the city that people usually mention when they are asked about the things they know about London city in England or the touristic places which they might go to if they were given the chance to travel to London anytime. While walking the streets of London and coming to the point where you will be next to Big Ben, in addition to the way it looks and the history it carries behind, you will also get astonished with the famous sound of the clock which all London is setting its clocks on and which is also used as a sound in most of the movies that bring scenes of Big Ben in them. This unique sound that you will definitely hear and feel is usually the focal point of the New Year celebrations in the United Kingdom since the last minutes are usually count with it and even television and radio stations tend to bring that sound in order to celebrate the last minutes of the year and welcome the new one coming their way. There has been a debate about the origin of the nickname Big Ben and even though it might not be universally accepted, almost the whole world is now calling it with that name - some people don't even know that this is not the real name of this tower and that it is known as the Clock Tower or Elizabeth Tower for the last couple of years. This is the highlight of London but there are lots of other places that one could visit while being in this beautiful British city and which could include Chinatown which is all about the Chinese food, shops and products (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SXA8F6fpZI), the Natural History Museum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=staR4hsWHzc), Covent Garden, Oxford and Regent famous streets, riding on the hop-on hop-off bus for a tour across the whole city, taking a walk by River Thames and of course visiting lots of other things that might include a cathedral and a castle. This is all about showing the beauty of Big Ben at night with all the lights that cover it and how it all appears along with River Thames; a real beauty! Make your plans now for visiting one of the landmarks of London and one place that people love to come closer to and take photos.

The entire structure is 135 metres (443 ft) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres (394 ft). It is currently Europe's tallest Ferris wheel[8] and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom with over 3.5 million visitors annually,[9] and it has made many appearances in popular culture. Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London,[1] and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower.[2] The tower is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower (prior to being renamed in 2012 it was known as simply "Clock Tower") to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. For ceremonial purposes, the palace retains its original style and status as a royal residence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIm3_MFeX-4
