Why does the leaning tower of Pisa lean? | Sci Guide with Jheni Osman | Head Squeeze
Believe it or not the Leaning Tower of Pisa was not designed to lean. Construction began in the 1173 and it wasn't completed until 1372! That's a whopping 199 years! Very early on the engineer realised that the tower was beginning to lean, and despite their best efforts the tower continued to tilt as the build continued. Over time the tower's tilt increased at an average rate of 1mm every year. 1mm doesn't sound by much but by the 1990 the tower was at risk of toppling over it was closed to the public. Engineers over the years had different ideas on how to stop it falling over. One such idea did more damage than good and is commonly known as Black September. In September 1995 architects decided to attach 10 steel weights 45 meters underground and pump in liquid nitrogen to freeze the soil. The idea was good enough but during installation the tower suddenly started leaning even more. Engineers immediately piled any heavy objects they could find to stop it falling! Leaning Tower of Pisa - Fun Fact Series EP19 | Mocomi Kids
http://mocomi.com/ Presents: Leaning Tower of Pisa The Leaning Tower of Pisa is amongst the most famous architectural landmarks of Italy. It is known as ‘La Torre Pendente’ in Italian. It is said that this tower was originally designed by an Italian architect Bonnano Pisano. It weighs around 14,500 tonnes and leans at a 10 degree angle. It stands on a clay foundation. The complete construction of the tower took over 800 years. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is only 55.86 meters tall and is the ‘smallest’ tower to have achieved worldwide recognition. It stood straight only for five years upon completion of its initial construction and then started leaning towards one side. Once the tower began to lean, the construction was halted for 100 years. Engineers hoped that the clay beneath the tower would settle and become hard enough to permit further construction. The tower has 8 storeys and 294 steps. It was estimated that the lean was increasing by one inch every 20 years. Over the years, several renowned architects put their heads together, to come up with a solution to stop the tower from leaning further. They finally concurred to remove ground from under the high side, instead of trying to add ground under the low side. The restoration and repair work began in 1999 and finished in June 2001, straightening the tower by about 16 inches, and returning it to the position it held in 1838. Today, the engineers believe that it is safe for at least another 300 years. The tower contains 7 bells, representing the seven notes of the musical scales. Many people believe that Galileo Galilei did his famous experiment of dropping two differently-sized cannon balls, to demonstrate that their speed of descent was independent of their mass, from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. People Who Know How To Pose With The Leaning Tower Of Pisa Follow us on instagram: @Scoop_Gram https://www.instagram.com/scoop_gram Like our facebook page: https://goo.gl/aQ1m4g The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of Italy's most iconic landmarks, and also one of the strangest sights in the world due to its unique tilt. Millions of tourists flock to see the torre each year, and their number-one goal is to use the power of forced perspective to take some seriously funny photos. Serving as the belfry of the adjacent Pisa Cathedral, the Leaning Tower was doomed almost from the very beginning. Its foundations were laid on unstable soil, and even in the year 1178, builders could see that something was very wrong with it. However, construction continued, and the monument was finally completed in 1372. The tower was closed between 1990 and 2001, during which time soil was removed from underneath it, returning it to a safer degree of leaning. Stabilising the Leaning Tower of Pisa
The leaning tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. Famous for its unintended tilt, the 56m tower took nearly 200 years to build. Work started in 1173 and five years later it started tilting. The shift was caused by shallow foundations of 3m and unstable subsoil. Engineers working on the tower in later years built upper floors with one side shorter than the other in an attempt to compensate. As a result the structure is now curved as well as tilting. The Leaning Tower of Pisa!
The Leaning Tower of Pisa or simply the Tower of Pisa is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt. The tower is situated behind the Pisa Cathedral and is the third oldest structure in the city's Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo), after the cathedral and the Pisa Baptistry. The tower's tilt began during construction in the 12th century, caused by an inadequate foundation on the ground too soft on one side to adequately support the structure's weight. The tilt increased in the decades before the construction was completed in the 14th century. It gradually increased until the structure was stabilized (and the inclination partially corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The height of the tower is 55.86 meters (183.27 feet) on the ground on the low side and 56.67 meters (185.93 feet) on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 2.44 m (8 ft 0.06 in). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons (16,000 short tons). The tower has 296 or 294 steps; the seventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase. Before restoration work performed between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees, but the tower now leans at about 3.99 degrees. This means the top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9 meters (12 ft 10 in) from the center.[6]

History of Leaning Tower of Pisa
Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa or abbreviated Torre di Pisa), or better known as the Tower of Pisa, is a campanile or cathedral bell tower in the city of Pisa, Italy. The tower of Pisa was actually made to stand vertically like a bell tower in general, but began to tilt shortly after its construction began in August 1173. It is located behind the cathedral and is the third building of Campo dei Miracoli (the rainbow field) of Pisa. The height of this tower is 55.86 m from the lowest ground level and 56.70 m from the highest ground level. The width of the wall beneath it reaches 4.09 m and at the peak of 2.48 m. Its weight is estimated to reach 14,500 tons. [1] The Tower of Pisa has 294 steps. With this tower, the economic income sector is increasing because of the tourist attraction. The construction of the Tower of Pisa is carried out in three stages over a period of 200 years. The construction of the first floor of the rocky white marble campanile began on 9 August 1173, which was an era of military prosperity and prosperity. The first floor is surrounded by a pillar with classic letters, which leads obliquely to the arches of the blinds. Actually, the Leaning Tower is supposed to stand tall as 55 feet tall, but because the Leaning Tower of Pisa is built on an unstable soil, the Tower is finally tilted from a 5 meter straight line. There is controversy over the identity of the architect of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. For several years the designer was predicated on a prominent local artist of the 12th century in Pisa, popularly known by his bronze mold, especially in Pisa Duomo. Bonanno Pisano left Pisa in 1185 to Monreale, Sicily, only to return home and die in his hometown. His sarcophagus was found at the base of the tower in 1820. keywords: leaning tower of pisa history, leaning tower of pisa prank, leaning tower of pisa experiment, leaning tower of pisa country song, leaning tower of pisa funny, leaning tower of pisa restoration, leaning tower of pisa lego, leaning tower of pisa kids, leaning tower of pisa 2017, leaning tower of pisa video for kids, leaning tower of pisa, leaning tower of pisa tour, leaning tower of pisa at night, leaning tower of pisa assassin's creed, leaning tower of pisa at its worst lean, leaning tower of pisa accident, leaning tower of pisa and colosseum, leaning tower of pisa and eiffel tower

Leaning tower of Pisa- The Mystery | Repost
Turning few pages back in the history books, in 1063, Pisans attacked the city of Palermo on the island of Sicily. They succeeded in conquering it and when they returned to Pisa, they decided to build a cathedral complex comprising of a Cathedral, a Baptistery, a Bell tower and a cemetery to show their pride. That’s how the construction started in August 1173. · When the construction reached 2nd floor in 1178, the tower began to sink due to the unstable subsoil. After that, due to various battles, the construction work was halted for almost a century which allowed the subsoil to settle. · During this time clocks are mounted on the unfinished construction of 3rd floor. · 7th floor was completed in 1319 and the final bell chamber was added in 1372. · The tower now leans at 3.99 degrees because of several restoration works undertaken. · IN THIS WAY, LEANING TOWER OF PISA TOOK ALMOST 2 CENTURIES TO CONSTRUCT.

New studies show that the tilt on London's iconic Great Clock has increased over the years. Big Ben, the iconic London landmark attached to the Houses of Parliament, is on the lean. But before you imagine a catastrophic future scene as the tower tumbles into the British Members of Parliament offices, don't worry - Michael McCann, Keeper of the Great Clock, says it has probably tilted since the day it was built by Victorian engineers back in 1858. [Michael McCann, Keeper of the Great Clock]: "Well, we're talking about a 300 foot tower which has a 0.26 degree lean, which is absolutely minute. To give you some idea, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is five degrees, so it's not even a twentieth of that. It's very, very small. But obviously we are monitoring it, and if it increases then we would be concerned." A survey for London Underground back in 2003 reported the rate of movement had accelerated over the years, and the tilt had increased 0.04in (0.9mm) a year, compared to the long-term average rate of just 0.025in (0.65mm) a year. This means the tower is now 435mm from vertical. At this rate, it would take 4,000 years for the London landmark to slant as far as the Pisa tower, which is 12 feet off the vertical. The present Clock Tower was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834.

The tower's tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure's weight. The tilt increased in the decades before the structure was completed and gradually increased until the structure was stabilized by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. =================================================================== * Goal - 1M SUBSCRIBER ================================================================== *DON'T FORGET TO WATCH THESE =================================================================== =================================================================== *CONNECT ================================================================== * Google+ - https://plus.google.com/110390922385796877229 * Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Ankur-Rathi-1746026225636326 *Twitter - https://twitter.com/rathiankur19933 =================================================================== *ABOUT MY CHANNEL =================================================================== Hello guys Thank you to visit my channel. Leaning Tower of Pisa Facts The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre pendente di Pisa) is a bell tower in Pisa, Italy. The Tower of Pisa is world famous for its prominent tilt to one side. The tower's foundations were built on soft subsoil which had difficulty supporting the tower's weight (14,500 ton). When the second storey was started the lean became noticeable and only got worse as construction continued. Originally the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees. After restoration work between 1990 and 2001 this angle was reduced to 3.97 degrees. The tower is 8 stories high, 55.86 m (183.27 ft) on the low side and 56.67 m (185.93 ft) on the high side. The entire Cathedral Square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. There are 294 steps on the north side of the tower and 296 steps on the south side. Seven bells sit in the bell-chamber at the top of the tower, one bell for each note of the musical major scale. The tower's design has widely been attributed to Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano however recent studies suggest the architect Diotisalvi may have been involved in the design. While the original architect of the tower has never been verified many are known to have worked on it including: Bonanno Pisano and Gerardo di Gerardo in phase 1, Giovanni Pisano and Giovanni di Simone during phase 2 before Tommaso di Andrea Pisano oversaw its completion. Because of the marshy underlying subsoil there are several other towers in Pisa with less prominent tilting issues. Germans used the tower as a lookout during World War II. The Allies new this but decided against bombing the area due to the impressive beauty of the tower and cathedral. To demonstrate that speed of descent is independent of an object's mass Galileo Galilei is said to have dropped two cannonballs of differing mass from the tower. However, this is believed to be an old wives' tale. How the Leaning Tower of Pisa has withstood earthquakes
(18 Jun 2018) LEAD IN It's a building that has perplexed engineers and scientists for centuries - how does the Leaning Tower of Pisa stay upright? The tower has withstood several large earthquakes over its history and experts now think they know why. STORY-LINE It's one of Italy's most famous tourist attractions, an engineering puzzle that draws millions of visitors each year. Every day, the square around the Leaning Tower of Pisa - Piazza dei Miracoli or Square of Miracles -  is filled with people taking photos of themselves appearing to hold the building up. The tower is actually the belfry of the Santa Maria Assunta cathedral. "We like it and we also made a lot of pictures with these hands, like all of tourists does here, yes, we like it," says Anezka Zvanutova, a tourist from the Czech Republic. Ines Heimerl, a tourist from Germany, says: "It's looking funny. It's very extraordinary and I do like it very much" Among the tourists it often is possible to see professors and researchers from the University of Pisa taking measurements and analyzing the ground around the tower. For centuries engineers and scientists have wondered how the Tower of Pisa has managed to survive and this area has been systematically studied since 1911. The latest study has focused on how the tower reacts to earthquakes, says engineer Nunziante Squeglia, from the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the University of Pisa. "The last study on the Tower of Pisa regarded the analysis of dynamic measurements revealed by the monitoring system of the tower. This has allowed us to better understand how the tower reacts when an earthquake hits Pisa," Squeglia says. What surprised Squeglia the most, was that the 5 degree lean seems to have helped the tower to survive earthquakes. Pisa is a low-seismic risk area, but at least four earthquakes have hit this region since the end of the 13th century. "When we started this research, we were sure that the tilt of the tower would have been a negative factor, and then that we would have discovered that the tower, due to its leaning, would have had a worse reaction compared to that of a straight tower; but we noticed that, due to the interaction between the structure of the tower and the soft soil, this tilt isn't a negative factor at all, on the contrary, we think that this can be a positive feature regarding the dynamic response of the tower," Squeglia explains. This study is led by Professor of Construction Technology at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Roma Tre, Camillo Nuti. It also involves five other universities from all around the world: University of La Sapienza di Roma, University of Chieti-Pescara, University of Pisa, University of Bristol (UK) and University of Fuzhou (China). Professor Nuti explains that the soft subsoil on which the tower is built, helps it to survive earthquakes. "The soft soil, which is the weakness of the tower that caused it to lean, is its strength because this soft ground acts as a shock absorber, preventing it from feeling horizontal movements and therefore the Tower survives earthquakes, even violent ones," he says. Over the years, several monitoring instruments, such as pendulums and an optical level, plus a set of five accelerometers, which detect movement, have been installed in the structure. Prof. Nuti and his team have analyzed the data collected by these accelerometers over the past few years, detecting the movements of the tower.
