Classroom Activities with Student Choice

15:28
Increasing Student Independence through Student Choice is on of my favorite practices in Elementary School. Today, I discuss how I implement Student Choice into daily classroom activities through rotations, centers and small group. I believe, we as teachers, have a responsibility to prepare our students for success. One important lesson that students can learn is how to be independent. In my classroom, students are given choice boards to choose from for both Reading and Writing. My partner teacher gives students choices in Math, Science, and Social Studies for her goal work. This ability to choose their assignments individually, allows students to feel that sense of independence and increased belief and responsibility. It then becomes our role to support each student on their path and continue to push them to be their best and learn to manage their time. This method can be used in any classroom, including Daily 5, where you want to promote an increased interest in education. How to manage 15+ Czech five year old kids in your classroom, if you only speak English? It´s easy, no worries. You need a clear and structured lesson plan, you need to be a leader and you need to show a big warm smile. Use body language too and you will succeed. Children love to be surprised, entertained, they love physical activities and once you do all of it, you can introduce and drill any language you like, even comparatives.

Put your right hand on your left knee, your left hand on your right. Your knees move in and out. Your hands stay tight. Now keep on with your moving but switch hands on your knees. Keep on moving in and out till we say freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. C’mon, move and freeze. Put one hand across your shoulder one hand across your back. Now jump in place. Do you like it like that? Now switch hands across your shoulders and switch hands across your back. Now just be nimble, just be quick, just like Jack. C’mon, jump and freeze. C’mon, jump and freeze. C’mon, jump and freeze. C’mon, jump and freeze. Everybody shake your body from your head down to your feet. And don’t stop shaking until we stop the beat. Shake it to the east and shake it to the west. Shake it, shake it, shake it with my friends who are the best. C’mon, shake and freeze. C’mon, shake and freeze. C’mon, shake and freeze. C’mon, shake and freeze. Put your right hand on your head, your left on someone’s knee. Now turn once in a circle and buzz like a bee. Now turn the other way, don’t let go or lose your spot. Keep turning left, keep turning right until the music stops. C’mon, turn and freeze. C’mon, turn and freeze. C’mon, turn and freeze. C’mon, turn and freeze. “Alright, you can move now.” http://www.youtube.com/user/thelearningstation

Primary Science - Classroom Organisation

19:47
This video considers different organisational strategies for teaching science in the primary classroom. These include managing whole class introductions and practical investigations as well as different types of group work. Advantages and disadvantages of each organisation are presented. Viewers are encouraged to think about how to choose the most appropriate strategy. The video particularly focuses on the need for organisation before a lesson and how the teacher might optimise the learning and assessment of the children during the activities. The video is illustrated with a variety of classroom examples. Types of Organisation 1: Whole Class - Introduction, practical activity, sharing science books, demonstration, drawing the lesson together 2: Group Work - Groups doing different practical activities, circus of different activities, one group only doing science Think about - Making the lesson relevant and stimulating. What needs to be done before the lesson. What equipment is available. How can it be organised. The childrens experience of group work. Time available. What will you do in the lesson The organisation you will choose will depend on - What you want the children to learn. What experience the class already have of group work. The time, equipment and materials available Your planning should include - What you need to collect and set out. Introducing the work. What the children will do. Monitoring and assessing their learning. Helping children of different abilities. Concluding the lesson The video was written and produced by Tina Jarvis, Frankie McKeon and Jon Shears from SCIcentre and University of Leicester ITS Multimedia Services. It was made with the kind cooperation of St Marys CE Primary School, Bitteswell, Leicester. Special thanks go to Linda Cork and Penny Vernon.

The Rules of the Classroom (song for kids about the 6 rules of the classroom)

02:18
THE RULES OF THE CLASSROOM A song for kids about the 6 rules of the classroom: 1. Raise your hand and wait to speak. 2. Walk in school. 3. Be nice. 4. Keep your hands and feet to yourself. 5. Clean up. 6. Look at the speaker. I've always subscribed to the philosophy that K-2 students need a more condensed (smaller) list of rules (like 2-5 of them), however I just couldn't help but add in the 6th rule here (Look at the speaker.) We talk about looking at the speaker SO much that I just couldn't leave it out in this new version of rules. Using Games in the Classroom

02:32
Every game has potential for learning! Consider the educational value in some of the more popular, entertainment-focused games that your students (and you!) already enjoy at home. Of course, not all games are school-appropriate, but you can approach any game from an educational perspective. Think of games as experiences rather than instruction -- as field trips, not textbooks. It's a perspective that's as valuable for students as it is for teachers.
