How to improve your English with MUSIC and MOVIES!

12:56
You learn the most English if you're having fun doing it. So today, I'm going to teach you how to improve your English by watching movies and by listening to music! Many of you already listen to English music and watch shows and movies that are in English. I'm going to teach you some activities that will make you active with the language you hear. You'll also learn fun games you can play by yourself or with a friend that will help you learn vocabulary, expressions, and pronunciation. By learning English from movies and music, you'll also sound more like a native speaker. http://www.engvid.com/how-to-improve-your-english-with-music-and-movies/ TRANSCRIPT To be, or not to be - that is the... Hi. James from engVid. Just practicing my Shakespeare. Well, not really. I just wanted to show you acting. Acting, being an actor can be a good way to learn English. And today I want to show you two fun ways to practice English doing things you already love to do. Okay? So, let's go to the board. Mr. E is saying: "I sound like Madonna!" That's not here yet, but that'll be the second one, but today or right now this part of the lesson is about movies, acting. What we want you to do or what I want you to do is go find a movie you love in English. I'm sure there's... If you're watching me, I'm sure you've watched some English television program or movie. I mean, I'm speaking a lot of English so I know you're used to it. What I... What I want you to do is pretend you are an actor in a movie, and we're going to take a few steps to get there. So the first thing is: Pick a movie that you love watching, because some of you watch it again and again. Star Wars, yeah, yeah? Or Harry Potter, if that's still out there, or Bond, James Bond. Right? Any of those movies. Okay, so you pick your movie. The second thing I want you to do is go through the movie and watch the scenes you love the best when the actor says something like: "Punk, do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?" And then pick a couple of those scenes. All right? The third thing I want you to do is go to this part, and it's i-m... It's www.imsdb.com. It's where you get scripts. Now, right now you're probably going: "What's a script?" Well, in music the words in the music are called lyrics. Okay? So when you're looking at the words in a song they're called the lyrics. But when you're looking at the words in a movie, it's from a script. And one actor has his part in a script, another actor has her part in a script. And these are the lines they say. This particular website has amazing amount... An amazing amount of movies with scripts, so you can go and find any of the latest ones, like of Jason Bourne, or I'm trying to think of something that came out. I don't know when you're going to see this, so just say Harry Potter, maybe Ironman. Okay? Go check it out, you'll see the scripts, you can go and look at it. The reason why I asked you up here is to pick out scenes is you can go to the scene on the script where it may say: "Car chase scene", "Gun scene", "Kissing scene", and you can look at it, and all of the words the actors say are there. Because I know sometimes you don't know what the actor is actually saying. Sometimes we have what's called relaxed speech. In relaxed speech, they might say: "What do you want?" and it comes out: "Whatda ya want?" And you're like: "What?" It's English. Now, we have a video on relaxed speech, you can go and check it out, and it will explain: "Whatda ya want?" and other ones. Okay? So, the lines that will be there, you might notice a big difference between what the actor says and what is actually written for what you should explain or you should understand. Okay? This is good, it's going to help you with your ears as well. There's a thing you can pick up from listening. Okay? So we want to look at the scripts and then listen. Now, watch the movie at your favourite part. So now you've got the script in your hand, you're going to watch that part. Read. Here's the funny thing, a lot of times people read when they're watching a movie, like they read the subtitles-you know the little words?-and they think: "My listening is good because I understand." No, you're reading, but it does help because it helps you put a picture, a word picture to the words you're hearing. And we're much better with pictures. Think of it this way: Have you ever walked up to someone and said: "I remember your name, but I don't remember your face." No, you don't do that. We always remember faces and we forget names. Those kind of words and sounds are hard to remember, but the picture we always keep.

My name is Emma, and in today's video we are going to do something very special. Okay? We are going to practice our listening skills by doing a really, really fun activity that I love to do with my classes. So, for this video, we are going to be listening for adjectives about the face. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a whole bunch of new words, and maybe some words you already know, when... That we can use to describe our faces. Okay? So you are going to first learn some new words and we're going to review some words; and once you have these words down, what we are going to do is I am going to describe a face to you, and while I describe it, you're going to listen carefully and you are going to draw the face. Okay? So this is what you're going to do: You're going to take your pen or your pencil, and a piece of paper, and you are going to draw what I describe. Okay? Now, it's okay if you're not a great artist; you don't have to be for this video. You don't have to Picasso or Leonardo Da Vinci. Okay? As you can tell, I'm not the greatest of artists, so that's okay. But after you listen and you draw what I say, you're going to look at your picture and you're going to compare it to my picture or what I was describing. And then you can see: "Okay. Are these the same? Are they different? Did I follow the instructions? Did I understand these adjectives correctly?" And so this is a great way to really practice your listening, and to also learn some new words. All right? So let's get started. Ta-da. Here is my art. Okay? So I'm going to describe these pictures now, just so you learn some new words, and we're... We're also going to review maybe some words you already know. Okay? And I hope none of my drawings creep you out; I know that, you know, they might be a little bit unusual, but let's get started. So, when we're talking about faces, there's many different ways to describe a face; I've just picked two. This man has a long face. Okay? His face is in the shape of an oval, but it's also very long. Now, compare this to this person who has a round face; more like a circle. Okay? So, during the description I'm going to be describing faces, and I'm going to either use the word: "a long face" or "a round face". Okay? So, here we have the eyes, we have the nose, we have the mouth... In this picture we have lips which are these things, so we might have really red lips or big lips, like Angelina Jolie; maybe small lips, thin lips. Okay? Another thing I'm going to talk about in this video is eyebrows. So, the eyebrows are this part of your face; they're the hairy part above the eyes, here. So, I have two different types of eyebrows. These eyebrows... So you see we have eyes here. The eyebrows here are very thin; whereas these eyebrows are thick, or we can also call them bushy eyebrows. Okay? Because they almost look like bushes. Bushy or thick. Okay. Another thing you're going to hear during this listening activity is I'm going to talk about wrinkles. So, what's a "wrinkle"? Well, as you get older, your face starts to develop these lines, usually around the eyes or maybe around, you know, your smile - and we call these age lines wrinkles. Okay? So here's the spelling of that word. So, you'll be hearing this word during the listening activity. You might also hear the word "braces". So, braces are something that helps your teeth to become straight. So, during the listening, one of the people I'm going to be describing may have braces. So this is the teeth, and it's just a piece of wire that goes across the teeth to help keep the teeth straight. Okay. So, anything else on this picture? No? Let's move on to this picture. The other thing you might hear during this activity is I might be describing facial hair. So, when I'm talking about facial hair, I'm not talking about the hair on the head; I'm talking about the hair on the face. So, this man has a lot of facial hair. He has a beard, which is hair that comes from your chin, down. You might have a short beard or a very long beard. This man has a long beard. I also put a moustache on this man, so that's the facial hair or the hair under the nose - the moustache. And this is how we spell that word. […]

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/englishlanguagegames Twitter: http://www.twitter/ESLchildren Website: http://www.EnglishLanguageGames.ORG Are you an ESL teacher looking for some fun English language games to use in your ESL beginners class? I was too a few years ago and I was all on my own so I started creating English teaching materials that would make learning English FUN and exciting Hi! My name is Karlee Demierre but my kids know me as ""Teacher Karlee""! I'm Canadian but for the past 3 years have been living in the cute beach town of Trujillo, Honduras. In 2012, My husband and I miraculously created an English Language school in 2 weeks ...which I like to refer to it as ""The Gongshow"" (Read the story on my site: http://www.englishlanguagegames.org/english-language-games/dream-come-true/ ) I've now been teaching English as a Second Language full time for a year at my school and absolutely love it! I teach 2 year old kids all the way up to adults, from the very basics to beginner to intermediate. This all began because I had been teaching an ESL beginners class to kids in Trujillo, Honduras for 2 years. Most ESL children's classes have between 4 to 20 kids... well I threw myself in a classroom of 30 to 40 ""untamed"" pre-school and kindergarden kids! (just to prove my sanity... I even volunteered!!) With no curriculum, no lesson plans, no previous experience and no guidance, I was on my own diving into this fun adventure called teaching English as a Second Language! The best part was that during this ""adventure of mine"", I discovered that teaching kids was truly my life's passion! A few years ago, I started to search online to get some ideas and I soon discovered that there wasn't much available that would keep these kids engaged, encourage them to participate in class and overall really learn English. So I started creating English language games and other English teaching materials that would engage my kids, accelerate their learning and really make learning English FUN for them! My mission is that these English language games will spark participation and ignite learning in your ESL beginners class. My goal is to give you some English teaching materials that will make it easy for you to teach ESL children and make it FUN for the kids to learn English! So I'm setting out to share my JOY with the world and I hope these English teaching materials and other ideas I share will help bring more LAUGHTER and PARTICIPATION to your ESL children's class and all the kids you LOVE! ... keep PLAYING and LEARNING! Teacher Karlee :-)

My name is Karlee Demierre but my kids know me as "Teacher Karlee"! I'm Canadian but for the past 3 years I have been living in the cute tropical beach town of Trujillo, Honduras. In 2012, My husband and I miraculously created an English Language school in 2 weeks ...which I like to refer to it as "The Gongshow" (Read the story on my site: http://www.englishlanguagegames.org/english-language-games/dream-come-true/ ) I've now been teaching English as a Second Language full time for a year at my school and absolutely love it! I teach 2 year old kids all the way up to adults, from the very basics to beginner to intermediate. This all began because I had been teaching an ESL beginners class to kids in Trujillo, Honduras for 2 years. Most ESL children's classes have between 4 to 20 kids... well I threw myself in a classroom of 30 to 40 "untamed" pre-school and kindergarden kids! (just to prove my sanity... I even volunteered!!) With no curriculum, no lesson plans, no previous experience and no guidance, I was on my own diving into this fun adventure called teaching English as a Second Language! The best part was that during this "adventure of mine", I discovered that teaching kids was truly my life's passion!
