Technical Terms: Serif and Sans-Serif (#1710)

04:13
https://macmost.com/e-1710 Most fonts can either be called Serif or Sans-Serif fonts. The difference is that Serif fonts have extended strokes at the ends and corners whereas Sans-Serif fonts do not. The use of this term predates computers, and the existence of serifs even predates modern printing. Today it is useful to know the difference when choosing a font for a document or graphic element.

Typography Tutorial - 10 rules to help you rule type

03:35
Graphic Design Tutorial: 10 Typography rules to help you improve your type skills. Get better at graphic design by understanding how to use type. Improve your layouts instantly by following these 10 easy to follow rules. How can you quickly apply typographic rules to regain control of your layouts by following these 10 golden rules of typography? These rules are distilled down from the things that I learned by going to Art Center College of Design. Generally speaking, there are two types of typography– expressive typography (type is visual, carries the meaning of the word and sometimes appears as physical shapes) and functional typography (type that is meant to be read). I will focus on the latter. When starting out, it is best to learn the fundamentals of good design: hierarchy (primary, secondary and tierchiary reads), flow (how a person “reads” the layout by following the movement of their attention), legibility (in Western culture, type is read top to bottom, left to right so it’s important to arrange type accordingly), grouping (organizing blocks of type in intelligent and logical groups) and interest, achieved through contrast (scale, texture, color, density, negative space). Use any typeface you like as long as it’s one of the following: Akzidenz Grotesque, Avenir, Avant Garde, Bell Gothic, Bodoni, Bembo, Caslon, Clarendon, Courier, Din Mittelschrift, Franklin Gothic, Frutiger, Futura, Garamond, Gill Sans, Gotham, Helvetica, Letter Gothic, Memphis, Meta, OCRB, Rockwell, Sabon, Trade Gothic, Trajan and Univers. _________________________________________________________________ Great books to learn more about typography: Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works by Erik Spiekermann http://amzn.to/2iNXwC8 Josef Müller Brockmann Pioneer of Swiss Graphic Design http://amzn.to/2k7o5Yb Typography Manual @2017 Chris Do https://blind.com/blog/typography-manual/ _________________________________________________________________ Animation by: Leo Dinh Red Cat Motion http://redcatmotion.com Music and sound design by: Adam Sanborne http://adamsanborne.com _ Listen to our podcast on iTunes: The Futur https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-futur/id1152604340?mt=2 Android Stitcher http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/aaron/the-futur HOW TO SUPPORT THE FUTUR: Purchase a Kit: http://theskool.co/collections/all or subscribe to the secret and private Master mind group on Facebook with exclusive videos not released anywhere else. "Bocksten Man" Style Cloak and Pattern

16:14
Note about squirrel species! I put an annotation on the video but I know a lot of devices don't display them. I misstated the squirrel species as the 'gray squirrel,' which of course wasn't introduced into Europe until well after the Middle Ages. What I should have said was the winter coat of the European Red Squirrel. The winter coat of the red squirrel is actually gray (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dd/MattiParkkonen_Orava.jpg). The Medieval 'menuvair' or miniver pattern is achieved by taking the white belly fur of the squirrels, surrounded by the gray fur of the winter coat (or other colors if not the winter coat) and stitching several together in square plates that yield the pattern. Other ways to cut the furs yielded different patterns (like the 'vair' pattern adopted for heraldic use), but squirrels were one of the most commonly used furs for lining garments in the Middle Ages. They eventually fell out of favor with the upper classes into the 15th century. A deeper look at the Bocksten Man style cloak, and how it's put together. Subtle, but often missed or omitted tailoring makes all the difference in the fit of this design over the shoulders and around the neck. The Gothic world comes to the University of Surrey, exploring 'Gothic Technologies, Gothic Techniques' at the International Gothic Association conference. Recent Gothic studies have foregrounded a plethora of technologies associated with Gothic literary and cultural production. Its presence is witnessed in how techno-science has contributed to the proliferation of the Gothic: the publishing and print culture disseminating Gothic texts, eighteenth-century architectural innovations, the on-line gaming and virtual Goth communities, the special effects of Gothic-horror cinema. http://www.surrey.ac.uk/features/conference-gothics http://www.igasurrey2013.com/ Music sourced via: www.audionetwork.com

Inside The World's Biggest Abandoned Castle

If you enjoyed this video be sure to check out the rest of our videos. And if you really liked it, consider subscribing! We will have many more videos in the very near future. Mesen Castle was built in the 17th century in a city called Lede, Belgium. The castle began its life as a royal home and stronghold for the Bette Family. This lasted until the late 1700s. During the early 1800s, the castle was made into a industrial building for large businesses. It was used as a gin distillery, a tobacco factory, and a sugar refinery. This all lasted until 1905 when the castle was turned into an impressive Gothic Revival Chapel and later, a boarding school. After WWI, the school was used as an elite boarding school for French speaking girls. These girls would wake up early every day for a 7am Mass, followed by exhausting classes and activities until the evening. The girls were taught how to act as members of high society. There were academic lessons as well as lessons on how to do proper housework and manage people. The school demanded very strict Victorian discipline. Girls were only allowed to have one person to visit per month, and could only return home for one month out of the year. Girls were usually sent to this school at age five where they would stay until they were eighteen, hopefully learning how to become proper members of high society. Eventually, in the 1960s, the school closed down. Ownership of the castle was passed on to the Belgian Ministry of Defense. Under their watch, the castle was neglected and began to decay. The building was named a national monument, but was never kept up with. The damage and looting got so bad that the Belgian government deemed it too expensive to repair. Sadly, in 2010, demolition of the structure began. Finally, in early 2014, the entire castle and all of its surrounding structures were demolished. Nothing is left of this once grand castle, rich with history.

"Numinous Beings Are We." Part 1 of 3. (Star Wars & the Gothic)

08:19
In this quasi-academic talk on literature and popular culture, Dr. Luke R. J. Maynard introduces his online web project, Cynehelm, and explores the relationship of the first six episodes of the Star Wars film saga to the traditions of eighteenth-century English Gothic fiction. -------CONTENTS------- PART I. (this video!) We look at the most commonly examined Gothic features of Star Wars: namely, patricide and Oedipal conflict in a purely Freudian tradition. Part II. We move on from the most typical, common Gothic reading of the saga to explore some other surprising ways we might consider this saga as an inherently Gothic story. Part III. After unearthing some interesting Gothic parallels in Part II, we apply these parallels to a new understanding of Luke's quest and Vader's cycle of fall and redemption as a classically Gothic arc.

Opening in theaters May 25th and VOD June 1st Directed by: Haifaa Al-Mansour Starring: Elle Fanning, Maisie Williams, Bel Powley, Douglas Booth, Joanne Froggatt & Stephen Dillane She will forever be remembered as the writer who gave the world Frankenstein. But the real life story of Mary Shelley—and the creation of her immortal monster—is nearly as fantastical as her fiction. Raised by a renowned philosopher father (Stephen Dillane) in 18th-century London, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Elle Fanning) is a teenage dreamer determined to make her mark on the world when she meets the dashing and brilliant poet Percy Shelley (Douglas Booth). So begins a torrid, bohemian love affair marked by both passion and personal tragedy that will transform Mary and fuel the writing of her Gothic masterwork. Adobe Muse Getting Started - Adding Fonts With Typekit

07:13
Adobe Muse Getting Started - Adding Fonts With Typekit VISIT US NOW http://www.graphicdesignertips.com ~ http://www.SMLStudios.com Choosing fonts for your next website design project has never been easier thanks to Adobe Muse. Within Muse there is a plugin service call Typekit that allows you to choose from tons of options for fonts. Web Safe Fonts One of the options with Typekit is to use Web-Safe fonts.Adobe Muse Typekit When you choose this option, a window appears with a few hundred fonts to choose from. You can also choose a font category to narrow down your search. The reason they are called web-safe is because they will not interfere in any search engine crawling and will in fact, export your text out as readable. Using System Fonts The other option which makes this plugin pretty powerful is the fact that you can use fonts that you have on your own computer. The only downside to this is that it will export the fonts as an image and make them unreadable text which will hurt you in search engines. I only recommend this on a small amount of text that is unimportant keyword-wise.

Gregorian Chants at 432Hz | 3 Hours of Healing Music

03:05:00
Gregorian Chants at 432Hz | Very Soothing Healing Music with Orchestral Arrangement For Awesome Meditations, Mantras, Chants and More, please subscribe to our channel here : http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=TheMeditativeMind Gregorian chant is the central tradition of Western plainchant, a form of monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song of the western Roman Catholic Church. Gregorian chant developed mainly in western and central Europe during the 9th and 10th centuries, with later additions and redaction. Although popular legend credits Pope St. Gregory the Great with inventing Gregorian chant, scholars believe that it arose from a later Carolingian synthesis of Roman chant and Gallican chant. Gregorian chants were organized initially into four, then eight, and finally twelve modes. Typical melodic features include a characteristic ambitus, and also characteristic intervallic patterns relative to a referential mode final, incipits and cadences, the use of reciting tones at a particular distance from the final, around which the other notes of the melody revolve, and a vocabulary of musical motifs woven together through a process called centonization to create families of related chants. The scale patterns are organized against a background pattern formed of conjunct and disjunct tetrachords, producing a larger pitch system called the gamut. The chants can be sung by using six-note patterns called hexachords. Gregorian melodies are traditionally written using neumes, an early form of musical notation from which the modern four-line and five-line staff developed. Multi-voice elaborations of Gregorian chant, known as organum, were an early stage in the development of Western polyphony. Building the Great Cathedrals - Gothic's Missing Link

02:24
When gothic architecture emerged in 12th Century France, builders moved away from the thick walls and rounded arches of the Romanesque style to much thinner walls supported by pointed arches and ribbed vaults. This evolution in architectural technique is best illustrated by the ruins of Ourscamp where both styles are readily apparent. Watch this bonus scene from "Building the Great Cathedrals" and be sure to check out our website for lots more: http://www.providencepictures.com/new... Building the Great Cathedrals premieres October 19, 2010 on Nova/PBS.

The Maya civilization flourished in the 5th century AD and the stone cities jutting out of the rainforest housed millions. During this incredible era the Kings, gleaming with jade and vibrant feathers marching through the jungles with thousands of their obsidian wielding warriors are about to introduce total warfare to the Maya world. Two Maya superstates, home to the Temple of the Great Jaguar Paw - Tikal, and the massive Snake Kingdom - Calakmul will collide and cycle between moments of triumph and disaster for not only themselves, but their entire world. And no aliens. Not ancient, not modern. The script was developed and the video was created by our good friend Cogito. CB Gesso website - Behance post footer thanks

00:31
www.cbgesso.com.br The design of the responsive CB Gesso website was made with sharp attention to code and usability. A high contrast single page web design that boldly showcases the logo, gives confidence in the brand and reflects simplicity, trustworthiness, and creates distinction while generating immediate leads through a strategic placement of a contact number to engage the local demographic to which the business targets. Source Sans Pro was chosen due to its clarity and legibility, a font distilled from the best archetypical qualities of American twentieth-century Gothic type models, which follows a simple and rational design approach with simplified glyph shapes. The colour palette was created using the identity from the logo to reinforce the business brand, maintaining the values throughout the design to give clear visual keys related to the different solid areas that represents the company and the attributes that are its sole distinction. http://zektor.eu

Robert Venturi & Denise Scott Brown - Symbolism and signs (6/118)

04:08
Internationally renowned architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown have helped transform contemporary design through their innovative architecture and planning, winning numerous prestigious awards for their work along the way. [Listener: Thomas Hughes] TRANSCRIPT: [RV] I think another element that’s important to mention is that of symbol, and it’s hard to recognise this now, but just a few decades ago, symbolism was completely out and, at least as a conscious element, was out in architecture. As I mentioned, there was abstract expressionism in the other arts and in architecture. And there really was an employment of symbolism when architecture adapted the vocabulary of the factory, of the steel frame, of the… of the… what are those little dot things on the steel frame we’re talking about? [DSB] Rivets. [RV] Rivets and all that stuff, but a… but a symbol was officially out. And it was somewhat a reaction against… to the early reaction… it was related to the early reaction of Modernism… as a reaction against eclecticism of architecture… adapting styles that existed in the 19th century Gothic versus Classical and all that. They called it Beaux Arts classical. Symbolism was out, and it was form. And I think we got involved in symbolism again, and it was unusual at that time, and it was essentially when we went and, i.e. thought of iconography as significant within the loft context. But also when we looked at the ordinary everyday architecture – which might be another element that we should emphasise, the pop, ordinary, generic architecture – I learned a lot about this from Denise Scott Brown. She introduced me to this idea of the significance of the pop and the ordinary, she corrupted me by taking me to Las Vegas. And our looking at there. And at Las Vegas is where I kind of learned about ah, signage is there, signage is relevant, and therefore symbol is part of the architectural and urban vocabulary, that that must be brought back into the vocabulary, the idea of form and symbol – not just form, and form and symbol, and that led to iconography. I wrote a book called 'Iconography and Electronics Upon a Generic Architecture', that hardly anyone has read or has – it was about 10 years ago – or reviewed, but anyhow… So the idea of the symbolism and the idea of the pop symbolism, the pop culture, is something that we have found very, very stimulating, and that’s why we went to Las Vegas. You know – by the way, we should mention, and remind people when we say Las Vegas, we are talking of the Las Vegas of 19… of let’s say, circa 1970, when we went there, circa 1970, and it’s not the Las Vegas of today. The Las Vegas of the Strip, when we were there essentially to learn the Urbanism that connected with strip architecture – again, a reaction against the Urbanism of the time, which was based on the Le Corbusier idea, to put it overly simply, of the Ville Radieuse, of the city, made up of a park with plops of high-rise slabs in them. We said, ah, let’s look at the wonderful stimulating city of Los Angeles. We go to Las Vegas to get a purer example of that time, of the strip and the form. So all of this comes into it, and there we were, at the same time connecting with the importance of the pop, of the ordinary, of the generic.
Dating Armor from Effigies: Be Careful!

05:24
Sometimes effigies can play a trick on you. For the most part effigies are carved within a few years of either side of the death of the individual they represent, but in some cases there exists a significant disparity from the date of death and date of manufacture which can cause confusion when trying to date the armor. The Coast of Commerce (1962) | BFI Britain on Film

02:11
Clip courtesy of the North East Film Archive. Watch the full film and more from the Britain on Film Coast and Sea collection on BFI Player - http://player.bfi.org.uk/britain-on-film/ Presenter Austin Steele invites viewers on a fascinating visual sweep along the industrious and scenic North Sea coastline, collecting characterful and instructive stories as he goes. This poetic 1960s television travelogue takes in the imaginary Gothic spirit of Whitby, a web of steel in boom-town Middlesbrough, historic Cerebos salt works at Greatham, the ‘cosmopolitan’ South Shields market and the shipyards of Tyneside where so many journeys have begun. Between 1962 and 1963 Tyne Tees Television broadcast superb documentaries on the rivers and coastline of the North East in a series called Your Heritage. Coast of Commerce continues the legacy of the travelogue, with a combination of social insight, picturesque landscape, evocative camerawork and descriptive voiceover. It is beautifully scripted by Phil McDonnell, despite the dubious comparison of South Shields market to an ‘Eastern bazaar’ due to a glimpse of three Yemeni men out shopping. True to the genre’s early roots, this travelogue alludes to the ‘exotic’, which is also evoked in picture postcard fisherwomen in Staithes bonnets and Bram Stoker’s imagined Whitby Goth. North East Film Archive is one of a network of regional film archives established to collect, preserve and show film made in, or about the North East of England. Our collections are non-fiction, and date from the early 1900s to the present day, providing a rich record of life in the region over the 20th century.
